[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 서울에서 부산까지 내륙을 관통하는 중앙선과 강릉에서 부산을 잇는 동해선에 이달 말부터 KTX-이음이 본격 투입된다. 중부내륙과 동해안이 3시간대 철도망으로 연결되면서 이동 편의가 크게 향상될 전망이다.  

국토교통부는 오는 12월 30일(화)부터 중앙선(청량리~부전)과 동해선(강릉~부전)에 시속 260㎞급 KTX-이음을 투입해 중·동해안 대도시 간 이동시간을 크게 단축한다고 15일 밝혔다. 예매는 16일(화)부터 시작된다.  

중앙선, 서울~부산 3시간 38분 시대  

중앙선은 최근 안동~영천 구간 신호시스템 개량으로 최고 운행속도가 향상되면서 청량리~부전(부산) 구간 최단 운행시간이 기존 3시간 56분에서 3시간 38분으로 단축된다. 청량리~태화강 구간도 3시간 12분에서 2시간 54분으로 빨라진다.  

운행 횟수도 대폭 늘어난다. 현재 하루 6회(상‧하행 3회) 운행 중인 청량리~부전 구간은 주말 기준 18회(상‧하행 9회)로 3배 확대되고, 청량리~안동 구간 역시 18회에서 20회로 늘어난다.  

그동안 정차하지 않았던 덕소, 북울산, 남창, 기장, 신해운대, 센텀역에도 일부 KTX-이음이 새로 정차해 지역 주민과 관광객의 이동 편의가 높아질 전망이다. 국토부는 향후 역별 이용 추이에 따라 정차 횟수를 조정할 방침이다.  

동해선, 강릉~부산 한층 가까워진다  

내년 1월 개통 1주년을 맞는 동해선에도 KTX-이음이 신규 투입된다. 부전~강릉 구간에 상‧하행 각 3회씩 총 6회 운행되며, 평균 소요시간은 3시간 54분으로 기존 ITX-마음(5시간 4분)보다 약 1시간 10분 단축된다.  

올해 1~11월 누적 이용객이 181만 명을 기록하는 등 활발한 수요를 보인 동해선은 이번 증속과 함께 부산·울산과 경북·강원 지역이 일일 생활권으로 묶이면서 관광‧산업 활성화가 더욱 탄력을 받을 것으로 기대된다.  

이와 함께 강릉선(청량리~강릉)에도 KTX-이음을 4회 추가 투입해 접근성을 강화한다.  

“고속철도 서비스 전국 확대”  

윤진환 국토교통부 철도국장은 “KTX-이음 투입으로 잠재력이 큰 경북·강원과 부산‧울산, 수도권을 더욱 긴밀히 연결할 수 있을 것”이라며 “앞으로도 전국 어디서나 고속철도 서비스를 누릴 수 있도록 철도망을 촘촘히 구축하겠다”고 말했다.

-Government to Launch High-Speed Trains on Jungang and Donghae Lines from December 30—More Trips, Shorter Travel Times**

High-speed travel between Seoul and Busan through Korea’s inland route, and between Gangneung and Busan along the east coast, will soon become much faster. From December 30, KTX-Eum trains will begin full-scale operation on the Jungang and Donghae lines, cutting travel times to the three-hour range and greatly improving convenience for passengers.  

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced on December 15 that KTX-Eum trains, which can reach speeds of up to 260 kilometers per hour, will be deployed on the Jungang Line (Cheongnyangni–Bujeon) and the Donghae Line (Gangneung–Bujeon) starting December 30. Ticket reservations open on December 16.  

Jungang Line: Seoul–Busan in 3 Hours 38 Minutes  

Following the completion of a signaling system upgrade between Andong and Yeongcheon, the Jungang Line’s KTX-Eum service will shorten the Cheongnyangni–Bujeon route’s minimum travel time from 3 hours 56 minutes to 3 hours 38 minutes. The Cheongnyangni–Taehwagang section will also shorten from 3 hours 12 minutes to 2 hours 54 minutes.  

Service frequency will increase significantly. The number of KTX-Eum trains operating between Cheongnyangni and Bujeon will triple from 6 to 18 per day (9 each way on weekends), while the Cheongnyangni–Andong route will expand from 18 to 20 daily trips.  

To further improve accessibility, some trains will newly stop at Deokso, Bukulsan, Namchang, Gijang, Sinhaeundae, and Centum stations, reflecting local demand. MOLIT plans to review stops and schedules based on passenger use and ridership patterns in the future.  

Donghae Line: Bringing the East Coast Closer  

The Donghae Line, opened in January 2025 and currently served by ITX-Maum trains, will also add six KTX-Eum services (three each way) between Bujeon (Busan) and Gangneung. Average travel time will be reduced to 3 hours 54 minutes, about 1 hour 10 minutes faster than the current ITX-Maum service, which takes 5 hours 4 minutes.  

The line has already recorded 1.81 million passengers in its first 11 months (January–November 2025). The new KTX-Eum service is expected to strengthen daily links between Busan‧Ulsan, North Gyeongsang, and Gangwon regions, stimulating tourism and local economies.  

In addition, four more KTX-Eum trains will be added to the Gangneung Line (Cheongnyangni–Gangneung), further improving access to the region.

Yoon Jin-hwan, Director General of Rail Policy at MOLIT, said, “With the introduction of KTX-Eum, connections between the Gyeongbuk and Gangwon regions—rich in potential—and major cities like Busan, Ulsan, and the Seoul metropolitan area will be further strengthened.” He added, “The government will continue to expand the high-speed rail network so that more people can enjoy fast and convenient rail service nationwide.”
