[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시는 19일 기준 김해국제공항 국제선 여객이 1천만 명을 돌파했다고 밝혔다. 1976년 개항 이후 최대 기록으로, 2018년의 987만 명을 넘어 지방공항 최초로 달성했다.

현재 김해공항 국제선은 주 42개 도시 1,546편이 운항 중으로, 2018년 말(41개 도시 1,306편)보다 약 18% 증가했다. 이는 부산시, 한국공항공사 김해공항, 지역 기관 등이 협력해 이뤄낸 성과로, 코로나19 팬데믹 이전 수준을 완전히 회복했음을 의미한다.

노선 확충과 인력 확보 노력  

부산시는 국제공항으로서의 위상 강화를 위해 중·장거리 노선 신설과 CIQ(세관·출입국·검역) 인력 확충에 힘써왔다.  

민선 8기에는 지난해 부산발 최초 장거리 노선인 부산~발리 직항편이 개설돼 연간 약 6만7천 명의 여객을 수송하고 있다. 올해는 지방공항 최초로 중앙아시아 노선인 부산~타슈켄트, 부산~알마티 노선이 잇따라 신설돼 1만여 명의 여객을 실었다.  

또한 시는 행정안전부와 국회를 수차례 방문해 노력한 끝에 2026년 증원 인력 21명(관세청 14명, 법무부 7명)을 확보했다. 더불어 CIQ 기관이 입국장 운영시간을 탄력적으로 조정해 이달 12일부터 오전 첨두시간대(7~10시)에 제2출국장 조기 운영을 시작, 연말·설 연휴 등 성수기 여객 처리 능력이 개선될 전망이다.

행사에는 국회의원, 부산지방항공청장, 시 관계자, 세관·출입국·검역기관장, 항공사 대표, 시민 등이 참석했으며, 축하공연과 경과보고, 유공자 포상, 천만 번째 승객 축하 이벤트 등이 진행됐다.

허남식 부산시 신공항추진본부장은 “부산시가 2028년 외국인 관광객 500만 시대를 목표로 하는 만큼, 국제선 네트워크 확대와 원활한 여객 처리를 위해 행정력을 집중하겠다”며 “지방공항 최초의 성과는 부산의 글로벌 경쟁력을 보여주는 지표이자 가덕신공항 항공 수요의 기반이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Busan City announced on December 19 that Gimhae International Airport has surpassed 10 million international passengers this year, marking the highest figure since its opening in 1976. The milestone surpasses the previous record of 9.87 million set in 2018 and marks the first time for any regional airport in Korea to reach that number.

Operations Fully Recovered to Pre-Pandemic Levels  

Gimhae Airport currently operates 1,546 weekly flights to 42 international cities, an 18 percent increase compared to 1,306 flights to 41 cities in 2018. According to the city, this milestone reflects the success of cooperative efforts between Busan Metropolitan Government, the Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) Gimhae office, and related local agencies working together as a “one-team system.”

Busan’s Route Expansion and Workforce Efforts  

To restore Gimhae Airport’s status as a key international gateway, Busan has focused on expanding medium- and long-haul direct routes while securing additional customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) personnel.  

Under the eighth municipal administration, Busan launched its first-ever long-haul international route—the Busan–Bali service—in October 2024, carrying around 67,000 passengers annually. This year, two new Central Asia routes, Busan–Tashkent and Busan–Almaty, were added, transporting approximately 10,000 travelers and easing local residents’ reliance on Incheon International Airport.  

The city also secured 21 new CIQ staff (14 from the Korea Customs Service and 7 from the Ministry of Justice) for 2026 following multiple proposals to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and National Assembly members. Additionally, CIQ agencies have implemented more flexible operating hours, enabling early-morning operation of the newly established second departure hall since December 12, which is expected to improve passenger handling during the upcoming holiday season.

Celebration Ceremony for the 10 millionth passenger.

A ceremony celebrating the milestone was held at 10 a.m. on December 19 at the Gimhae Airport International Terminal, organized by the Korea Airports Corporation. Participants included members of the National Assembly, the Busan Regional Aviation Administration, the Air Force’s 5th Air Mobility Wing, CIQ agency heads, airline executives, and local citizens.  

The event featured performances, progress reports, commendation ceremonies, and a special celebration for the 10 millionth passenger.

Heo Nam-sik, head of Busan’s New Airport Promotion Headquarters, said the city will continue focusing administrative efforts on air network expansion and seamless passenger services as it pursues its goal of attracting five million foreign tourists annually by 2028.  

Heo added that reaching 10 million international passengers is both proof of Busan’s growing global appeal and a crucial foundation for future demand at the new Gadeokdo Airport, which the city aims to open at the earliest possible date.
