[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산대학교와 국가보훈부가 29일 교내 학군단 앞에서 동문 6·25 참전유공자 명비 제막식을 열고, 나라를 위해 헌신한 동문 255명의 이름을 역사 속에 새겼다.

부산대학교는 이날 오후 학군단 앞에서 국가보훈부와 함께 '부산대학교 동문 6·25 참전유공자 명비' 제막식을 개최했다. 이날 행사에는 참전유공자와 보훈 관계자, 대학 구성원 등이 참석해 동문들의 희생과 헌신을 기렸다.

제막식은 국민의례를 시작으로 내빈 소개, 기념사와 축사, 명비 제막 순으로 진행됐다. 최재원 부산대 총장은 기념사를 통해 “동문 한 분 한 분의 이름을 기억하는 것은 대학의 책무이자 미래 세대에 전해야 할 역사”라며 깊은 존경과 감사를 표했다. 권오을 국가보훈부 장관은 기념사를 통해 “청년 학도였던 부산대 동문들의 숭고한 헌신이 오늘의 대한민국을 만들었다”고 밝혔다.

이날 행사에는 서영철 재경총동문회장, 김성범 ROTC총동문회 수석부회장, 윤일현 금정구청장, 총학생회 대표단이 참석했다. 또한 부산대 동문 참전유공자인 이종근 씨, 김정진 씨, 박성순 씨, 현기숭 씨가 직접 참석해 행사의 의미를 더했다. 참전유공자회 부산광역시지부 허경 지부장도 함께해 참전세대와 대학 간 연대를 상징적으로 보여줬다.

부산대와 국가보훈부는 지난해 9월, 부산대 동문 출신 6·25 참전유공자의 희생과 공헌을 기리기 위해 명비 건립을 추진하기로 업무협약을 체결했다. 이후 양 기관은 부산대 졸업자 중 1920년부터 1940년 사이 출생자 명부와 국가보훈부의 참전유공자 명부를 대조·검증해 총 255명의 동문 참전유공자를 발굴했다.

명비는 가로 6.4미터, 세로 2.7미터, 높이 3.4미터 규모로 제작됐으며, 입학 연도 순으로 이름이 각인됐다. 당초 다른 장소가 검토됐으나, 역사적 고증과 학내 의견을 반영해 학군단 인근으로 최종 입지가 조정됐다.

부산대는 이번 명비 건립을 계기로 참전 동문들의 이름을 지속적으로 기리고, 아직 기록되지 못한 전몰자와 유공자에 대해서도 추가 발굴을 이어가며 그 뜻을 대학의 역사로 남길 계획이다.

Pusan National University and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on Tuesday unveiled a memorial at the university’s ROTC complex to honor 255 alumni who served in the Korean War, paying tribute to their sacrifice and dedication to the nation.

The unveiling ceremony was held on the afternoon of the 29th in front of the ROTC building on the PNU campus. The event began with a national ceremony, followed by introductions of guests, commemorative remarks, congratulatory addresses, and a joint unveiling of the memorial stone.

PNU President Choi Jae-won expressed deep respect and gratitude for the veterans, saying that remembering each alumnus by name is both the university’s responsibility and a message to future generations. A commemorative address from Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul was delivered on his behalf, highlighting the enduring legacy of student-soldiers whose service laid the foundation for today’s Republic of Korea.

The ceremony was attended by Seo Young-cheol, president of the PNU Alumni Association in the Seoul metropolitan area; Kim Sung-beom, senior vice president of the ROTC Alumni Association; Yoon Il-hyun, mayor of Geumjeong District; and representatives of the student government. Alumni veterans Lee Jong-geun, Kim Jeong-jin, Park Sung-soon, and Hyun Gi-soong were also present, adding special significance to the event. Heo Kyung, head of the Busan branch of the Korean War Veterans Association, attended as well, symbolizing solidarity between the veteran community and the university.

PNU and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs signed a memorandum of understanding in September last year to promote the construction of a memorial honoring PNU alumni who served in the Korean War. Through a joint verification process, the two institutions identified 255 alumni veterans by cross-checking graduation records of those born between 1920 and 1940 with the ministry’s official list of Korean War veterans.

The memorial measures 6.4 meters wide, 2.7 meters long, and 3.4 meters high, with the names of the 255 alumni engraved in order of admission year. After internal discussions regarding historical verification and location, the university finalized the site near the ROTC complex.

PNU stated that the memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by its alumni and pledged to continue efforts to identify and honor additional veterans whose contributions have yet to be fully recorded in history.
