[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 미국의 베네수엘라 공습과 니콜라스 마두로 체포 사태를 두고 나경원 국민의힘 의원이 “대한민국이 가야 할 길과 가지 말아야 할 길을 보여주는 이정표”라며 강도 높은 비판을 쏟아냈다

 

나경원 의원은 최근 자신의 SNS 글에서 미국의 베네수엘라 공습과 마두로 체포 소식을 언급하며 “부패 독재 정권은 반드시 무너진다”며 “지금 대한민국이 베네수엘라의 길을 따라가고 있다면 즉시 멈춰야 한다”고 주장했다. 

 

베네수엘라 몰락·대한민국 경고  

나 의원은 먼저 “한때 남미의 부국이었던 베네수엘라는 왜 몰락했는가”라며 “의회를 장악하고, 사법부를 시녀화하고, 언론에 재갈을 물린 ‘제도적 독재’가 그 시작이었다”고 지적했다. 그는 “견제받지 않는 권력은 필연적으로 썩었다”며 “마두로 정권은 마약 카르텔과 결탁해 국제 마약 유통의 핵심 통로로 전락했고, 전 세계 최대 석유 매장국이 외환·인플레이션 위기에 허덕이는 신세가 됐다”고 비판했다.  

 

이어 “지금 대한민국의 모습은 어떤가. 베네수엘라가 걸었던 길을 빼닮았다”고 한 뒤 “검찰 해체, 대법관 증원 사법 장악, 정치보복, 국제사회까지 우려하는 ‘입틀막법’ 등 권력에 불리한 판결과 발언을 봉쇄하고 야권을 말살하려는 노골적 만행이 이어지고 있다”며 “베네수엘라 독재정권과 꼭 닮았다”고 주장했다. 

 

그는 강선우·김병기 공천 헌금 의혹, 전재수 금품 수수, 장경태 성범죄 의혹, 이춘석 차명 거래, 김현지·김남국 인사 청탁 의혹 등을 열거하며 “권력 핵심의 부패 의혹이 끊이지 않는다. 견제받지 않는 절대 권력이 낳은 필연적 부패”라고 했다.  

 

‘친중 편향 외교’ 경고  

나 의원은 둘째로 국제 질서 변화를 언급하며 “이번 마두로 체포는 한 독재자의 몰락을 넘어 국제질서가 어떻게 재편되고 있는지를 적나라하게 보여준다”고 평가했다. 그는 “미국은 금융 제재를 넘어 군사력까지 동원해 제재를 실제 집행했고, 국제 금융시장은 이를 목격한 뒤 제재 대상국·반미·친독재 노선을 걷는 국가들에 대한 리스크 프리미엄을 높이고 자본은 안전 자산과 기축통화인 달러로 쏠리고 있다”고 말했다.  

 

베네수엘라 정권과 중국의 밀착도 거론했다. 그는 “베네수엘라 독재정권은 미국과 각을 세우고 중국의 품에 안겼다”며 “중국은 ‘석유 담보 차관’ 방식으로 약 600억 달러, 우리 돈 80조원이 넘는 자금을 베네수엘라에 쏟아부었지만 정권 붕괴로 회수 가능성은 불투명해졌다”고 했다. 또 “중국 정유시설 가동에 필요한 베네수엘라산 중질유 공급망마저 흔들리면서 에너지 안보와 재정이 동시에 타격을 입고 있다”고 덧붙였다.  

 

나 의원은 “이 말은 곧 섣부른 친중 줄서기가 더 이상 감성의 문제가 아니라 곧바로 국가의 손익계산으로 이어진다는 의미”라며 “미국과 충돌하는 정권, 중국에 과도하게 기대는 체제에 베팅하면 그 정권이 흔들릴 때 함께 추락할 수 있는 도미노 리스크”라고 경고했다. 

 

그는 “한국이 한미동맹과 자유민주 진영에서 모호한 태도를 보이며 중국 눈치 외교에 머문다면 투자·공급망·기술 협력에서 우선순위에서 밀리고, 금융·외교·안보 전 분야에서 신뢰하기 어려운 파트너로 분류될 위험에 직면할 수 있다”고 했다.  

 

“6월 지방선거, 마지막 방파제”  

나 의원은 오는 6월 지방선거를 “대한민국의 생존을 위한 ‘마지막 방파제’”로 규정하며 정치적 선택의 중대성을 강조했다. 그는 “국제질서 재편기, 경제 안보 위기 속에서 자유민주주의 대한민국의 길로 갈 것인가, 아니면 독재와 부패, 고립의 베네수엘라행 급행열차를 탈 것인가의 갈림길에 서 있다”고 말했다.  

 

또 “베네수엘라의 비극은 총성으로 시작되지 않았다. 법을 바꾸고, 제도와 선거를 왜곡하며 조용히 찾아왔다”며 “지금 멈추지 않으면 다음은 없다”고 했다. 그는 “독재 정권은 결국 무너진다. 그러나 그 과정에서 국민이 치르는 대가는 너무나 가혹하다”며 “국민의 현명한 선택만이 이 위험한 질주를 멈출 수 있다”고 했다.  

 

교민 보호도 주문  

나 의원은 글 말미에서 베네수엘라 현지 교민 안전 대책을 촉구했다. 그는 “정부는 베네수엘라 혼란에서 우리 교민의 안전을 최우선으로 챙겨야 한다”며 “가용한 모든 외교·영사 역량을 총동원해 단 한 명의 국민도 다치지 않도록 만전을 기해야 한다”고 밝혔다.

Rep. Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party argued that the latest U.S. military action against Venezuela and the reported arrest of President Nicolás Maduro serve as “a signpost showing the road Korea must take and the road it must never take,” warning that corrupt authoritarian regimes “always collapse in the end.”

 

 Venezuela’s collapse and Korean parallels  

Na stressed that Venezuela, “once one of South America’s richest nations,” began to fall when an “institutional dictatorship” took hold, with the regime “seizing control of the legislature, turning the judiciary into a handmaiden, and gagging the press.”

 

She said that unchecked power “inevitably rotted,” claiming the Maduro regime “colluded with drug cartels, turned the country into a key hub in international narcotics trafficking, and reduced a nation with the world’s largest proven oil reserves to one ravaged by foreign-exchange and inflation crises.”

 

She then drew a parallel with Seoul, saying “the current situation in South Korea closely resembles the path Venezuela took,” citing what she called attempts to dismantle the prosecution service, pack the Supreme Court, weaponize political retaliation, and push through a “gag law” criticized even by the international community.

 

In this climate, she argued, high-level corruption “sprouts like poisonous mushrooms,” listing allegations involving ruling-camp figures and describing them as “the inevitable corruption born of absolute power that faces no checks.”

 

Warning against pro-China tilt  

Turning to foreign policy, Na said Maduro’s fall “lays bare how the international order is being reshaped,” noting that Washington has moved from financial sanctions to the actual use of military force to enforce them, sending a message about the spillover risks of international crime to the global economic and security system.

 

She pointed out that the Venezuelan dictatorship “turned its back on the United States and threw itself into China’s arms,” with Beijing extending more than 60 billion dollars in oil-backed loans, only to see repayment prospects grow “highly uncertain” as the regime faltered.

 

Na added that even China’s energy security is being shaken as supplies of Venezuelan heavy crude needed to run Chinese refineries come under threat, dealing a simultaneous blow to its energy and fiscal stability.

 

She argued that markets are already reacting, with risk premiums rising for countries under sanctions or following anti-U.S., pro-dictatorship lines, while capital flows toward “safe assets and the key currency, the dollar.”

 

“This means that rashly lining up with China is no longer a matter of emotion but a direct calculation of national profit and loss,” Na said, warning that betting on regimes that collide with Washington and depend excessively on Beijing entails “domino risks” of falling together when those regimes wobble.

 

If South Korea maintains an ambiguous stance within the U.S.–ROK alliance and the free-democracy camp and sticks to “China-watching diplomacy,” she cautioned, the country risks being pushed down the priority list in investment, supply chains, and technology cooperation and being labeled an unreliable partner in finance, diplomacy, and security, with direct damage to the national economy.

 

June local elections as ‘last breakwater’  

Na described the upcoming June local elections as “the last breakwater for South Korea’s survival,” arguing that the country now stands at a crossroads: “whether to take the path of a free-democratic Republic of Korea or to board the express train to Venezuela-style dictatorship, corruption and isolation.”

 

She emphasized that “Venezuela’s tragedy did not begin with gunshots,” but arrived quietly “through changes in laws and the distortion of institutions and elections,” insisting that “if we do not stop now, there will be no next time.”

 

“Dictatorships eventually fall,” she wrote, “but the price paid by the people in the process is unbearably harsh,” adding that only the “wise choice” of the Korean people can stop this “dangerous race.”

 

Call to protect Korean nationals in Venezuela  

In closing, Na urged the government to place the safety of Korean nationals in Venezuela at the highest priority amid the turmoil. She called on the authorities to mobilize “all available diplomatic and consular capabilities” to ensure that “not a single Korean citizen is harmed.”
