최근 정대철 헌정회장은 옛 민주당 출입 정치부 기자 10여 명과 저녁 모임을 가졌다. 나는 헌정회 대변인으로 같이 자리했는데, 이날 참석한 기자들은 대부분 현역에서 은퇴한 한참 선배들이다. 정대철 회장은 김대중 대통령 시절 이런저런 이야기를 하다, 오래 전의 일이었던, 전두환 전 대통령과의 재미난 일화를 들려줬다. 아래는 그 내용이다.

2010년대 어느 날 오후 정대철 당시 민주당 고문은 개인 약속이 있어 서울 소공동 롯데호텔을 찾았다. 호텔 1층 로비를 걸어가는데, 양복을 입은 젊은 남자가 다가와 말을 걸었다.

 

“대표님, 각하께서 찾으십니다.”

“각하라니? 어느 각하를 말하는 거야?”

 

정 회장은 머리속으로 누굴까 궁금했다. 김대중 대통령은 서거했고, 김영삼 대통령은 살아있을 때였다. 그런데 젊은 남자로부터 의외의 답이 돌아왔다. “전두환 각하입니다. 각하님이 잠시 뵙자고 합니다.” 정대철은 “전두환이?”라고 혼자말을 했다. 전두환과는 아무런 인연이 없었기 때문이다. 한 번도 얼굴을 직접 본 적도 없었다.

 

젊은 남자는 전두환 경호원이었다. 경호원을 따라가니, 호텔 1층 로비 커피숍 가운데 전두환이 있고 그 옆으로 20여 명의 측근들이 앉아 있었다. 전두환 바로 옆의 장세동만 기억이 나고, 나머지는 모르는 사람들이었다.

전두환이 그 특유의 걸걸한 목소리로 먼저 인사를 건넸다. “정 대표, 앉으시죠. 제가 미안하게 됐습니다.” “무슨 말씀을? 저한테 개인적으로 미안한 게 뭐 있습니까?” “아, 저 때문에 정치규제로 고생 좀 하지 않았습니까?” 전두환은 신군부 쿠데타 이후 1980년 김대중, 김영삼, 김종필, 정대철 등 야당 정치인들을 정치활동 규제자로 묶어 아예 정치활동을 못 하게 했다.

 

정대철은 전두환을 보고 웃으며, “아이고, 저는 오히려 고맙게 생각하고 있습니다.” “어허, 고맙다고요? 지금 나를 비꼬는 거요?” 전두환이 껄껄 웃었다. “아니, 제가 정치규제 5년 동안 미국에 가서 그동안 못다 한 박사논문을 써서 정식 정치학박사를 받았습니다. 비꼬는 게 아닙니다.” 실제로 정대철은 정치규제 기간 다시 미국 미주리 대학교로 유학을 떠나 박사학위를 받았다. “아, 그렇군요.” 전두환이 고개를 끄덕였다.

 

전두환은 몸을 기울여 정대철 쪽으로 다가오는 자세를 취한 뒤, 정대철의 얼굴을 정색으로 바라보았다. 그리고 진지하게 말을 꺼냈다. “정 대표가 김대중~~ 선~생을 모시고 정치를 했지요?” 전두환은 ‘김대중’ 이름을 먼저 꺼낸 뒤, 그다음 잠시 생각하더니 ‘대통령’ 대신 ‘선생’이란 호칭을 조심스레 꺼냈다. 아마 예우의 뜻에서 1970, 80년대 당시 김대중 측근들이 부르던 호칭을 불러주는 것으로 정대철은 느꼈다. “예, 저는 쭉~김대중 대통령을 모시고 정치를 했지요.” 민주당 대표를 역임한 정대철은 김대중과 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 정치인이다. 아버지 정일형 박사는 젊은 정치인 김대중의 정치적 대부였고, 어머니 이태영 박사는 김대중의 정치적 대모였다. “김대중과 같이 정치하라.”는 부모의 유언에 따라 정대철은 평생 김대중 대통령과 함께 정치를 했다. 정대철 대표의 아들 정호준 전 의원도 민주당에 있으니, 3대에 걸친 민주당 뿌리다.

 

전두환은 잠시 생각을 하는 듯하더니, “아, 내가 김대중 대통령 때가 가장 좋았습니다.” 전두환의 얼굴빛이 환해졌다. “예? 그런가요?” “아, 내가 김대중 대통령을 죽이려고 했던 사람 아닙니까? 그런데 김 대통령이 대통령 재임 중 전직 대통령의 국정경험을 듣겠다고 저를 청와대로 다섯 번이나 초청하지 않았습니까.” “그랬지요. 그때는 지금과 달리 전·현직 대통령들이 자주 만났지요.” “그게 말처럼 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 김대중 대통령이 훌륭하다고 봅니다. ” “예.” 전두환은 다시 정대철의 눈을 지그시 쳐다보면서, “그래서 제가 김대중 대통령을 존경합니다. 제가 이 얘기를 하려고 정 대표를 불렀습니다.” 정대철은 당시 머리가 띵! 하는 감동을 받았다고 한다. 당시 전두환의 말에서 진심을 느꼈다. 진심이 아니라면 김대중 대통령이 이미 서거한 마당에 굳이 전두환이 자신을 불러 그렇게까지 말할 필요가 없었기 때문이었다.

 

실제로 전두환은 2009년 김대중 대통령 국장 장례식에도 참석하고, 다른 언론 인터뷰 등지에서 여러 차례 “김대중 전 대통령 시절이 제일 행복했다”고 발언한 적이 있다. 김대중 대통령은 취임 직후 정치보복을 하지 않겠다고 약속하고, 재임 기간 전두환·노태우 등 전직 대통령들에 대해 깍듯이 예우했다.

 

정대철은 그때 ‘용서와 화해의 힘’을 보았다고 했다. 그래서 정대철은 요즘 강연 때마다 용서와 화해의 정신을 강조한다. 정대철은 스스로 ‘용서와 화해의 전도사’를 자처한다. 현대사에서 가장 대표적인 ‘용서와 화해의 세계적 지도자’로 남아공의 넬슨 만델라 대통령과 한국의 김대중 전 대통령을 꼽는다.

Chun Doo-hwan called out to Jeong Dae-cheol... "I respect President Kim Dae-jung!"

Recently, Jeong Dae-cheol, chairman of the Constitutional Council, had a dinner meeting with about ten former political reporters covering the Democratic Party. I was there as the spokesperson for the Constitutional Council, and most of the reporters in attendance were retired veterans. Chairman Jeong Dae-cheol, while discussing various topics from the Kim Dae-jung era, shared an amusing anecdote from long ago about former President Chun Doo-hwan. Below is the transcript.

An Amusing Anecdote Recounted by Jeong Dae-cheol, Chairman of the Constitutional Council

One afternoon in the 2010s, Jeong Dae-cheol, then an advisor to the Democratic Party, was at the Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul, for a personal appointment. As he walked through the hotel's first-floor lobby, a young man in a suit approached him and spoke to him.

"Mr. Chairman, your Excellency is looking for your Excellency."

"Your Excellency? Which Excellency are you referring to?"

Chairman Jeong wondered in his mind who it was. President Kim Dae-jung had passed away, and President Kim Young-sam was still alive. Then, a surprising answer came from a young man. “Your Excellency Chun Doo-hwan. Your Excellency would like to see you briefly.” Jeong Dae-cheol muttered to himself, “Chun Doo-hwan?” He had no connection with Chun Doo-hwan. He had never even met him in person.

The young man was Chun Doo-hwan’s bodyguard. Following the bodyguard, he found Chun Doo-hwan in the middle of a coffee shop on the first floor of the hotel lobby, with about 20 of his close associates sitting next to him. He only remembered Jang Se-dong, who was right next to Chun Doo-hwan; the rest were unknown.

Chun Doo-hwan greeted him first in his characteristically gravelly voice. “Representative Jeong, please have a seat. I apologize.” “What did you say? Is there something you feel personally sorry for?” “Oh, you suffered a lot because of me due to political restrictions, didn’t you?” After the military coup in 1980, Chun Doo-hwan placed opposition politicians like Kim Dae-jung, Kim Young-sam, Kim Jong-pil, and Chung Dae-chul under political restrictions, preventing them from engaging in politics.

Chung Dae-chul smiled at Chun Doo-hwan and said, "Oh, I'm actually grateful." "Oh, thank you? Are you being sarcastic?" Chun Doo-hwan chuckled. "No, during the five years of political restrictions, I went to the United States and wrote my unfinished doctoral dissertation, earning a formal doctorate in political science. I'm not being sarcastic." Indeed, during his political restrictions, Chung Dae-chul went back to the University of Missouri and earned his doctorate. "Oh, I see." Chun Doo-hwan nodded.

Chun Doo-hwan leaned toward Chung Dae-chul, looked him in the eye with a serious expression, and then began to speak earnestly. "Representative Chung, you served Kim Dae-jung, right?" Chun Doo-hwan first mentioned the name "Kim Dae-jung," then, after a moment of reflection, cautiously chose the title "Sir" instead of "President." Jeong Dae-cheol sensed that he was using the title used by Kim Dae-jung's associates in the 1970s and 1980s, likely out of respect. "Yes, I've always served President Kim Dae-jung in politics." Jeong Dae-cheol, a former leader of the Democratic Party, is a politician inseparable from Kim Dae-jung. His father, Dr. Jeong Il-hyeong, was the young politician Kim Dae-jung's political godfather, and his mother, Dr. Lee Tae-young, was Kim Dae-jung's political godmother. Following his parents' dying wish to "politically work alongside Kim Dae-jung," Jeong Dae-cheol spent his entire life working alongside President Kim Dae-jung. Jeong Dae-cheol's son, former lawmaker Jeong Ho-jun, is also a member of the Democratic Party, representing three generations of its roots.

Chun Doo-hwan seemed to think for a moment, then said, "Ah, I loved the time when Kim Dae-jung was president the most." His face brightened. "Huh? Is that so?" "Oh, wasn't I the one who tried to kill President Kim Dae-jung? But didn't President Kim invite me to the Blue House five times during his presidency to hear about the former president's governing experience?" "Yes. Back then, unlike now, former and current presidents met frequently." "That's not as easy as it sounds. I think President Kim Dae-jung is great."

"Yes." Chun Doo-hwan looked into Jeong Dae-cheol's eyes again and said, "That's why I respect President Kim Dae-jung. I called Representative Jeong to tell you this." Jeong Dae-cheol said he felt a pang of emotion at the time. He sensed sincerity in Chun Doo-hwan's words. If they weren't sincere, there would have been no need for Chun Doo-hwan to summon him and speak to him like that, now that President Kim Dae-jung had already passed away.

Indeed, Chun Doo-hwan attended President Kim Dae-jung's state funeral in 2009 and repeatedly stated in media interviews that "the time when Kim Dae-jung was president was the happiest." Immediately after taking office, President Kim Dae-jung promised not to engage in political retaliation and treated former presidents like Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo with the utmost respect during his term.

Jeong Dae-cheol said he witnessed the "power of forgiveness and reconciliation" at that time. Therefore, he emphasizes the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation in every lecture he gives these days. He calls himself an "evangelist of forgiveness and reconciliation." He cites South African President Nelson Mandela and former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung as the most representative "global leaders of forgiveness and reconciliation" in modern history.
