브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 국민의힘이 6·3 지방선거를 앞두고 당 쇄신 차원에서 당명 교체에 나선다. 현재 당명인 국민의힘을 사용한 지 5년 5개월여 만으로, 이르면 다음 달 중 새로운 당명이 확정될 전망이다.

정희용 국민의힘 사무총장은 12일 오전 서울 여의도 국회에서 열린 최고위원회의 직후 기자들과 만나 “책임당원을 대상으로 실시한 당명 개정 찬반 조사에서 약 70%가 찬성 의견을 밝혔다”며 “당명 개정 절차에 공식 착수한다”고 밝혔다.

국민의힘은 지난 9일부터 11일까지 책임당원 77만4천 명을 대상으로 휴대전화 자동응답(ARS) 방식의 여론조사를 실시했다. 전체 응답률은 25.24%였으며, 이 가운데 13만3천여 명인 68.19%가 당명 개정에 찬성한 것으로 집계됐다.

당명 개정과 함께 새 당명 제안도 동시에 진행됐다. 책임당원을 대상으로 한 당명 제안 접수에는 약 1만8천 건의 의견이 모였다. 국민의힘은 이날 오후부터 서지영 당 홍보본부장 주도로 전 국민이 참여할 수 있는 새 당명 공모전을 시작할 계획이다.

당은 필요할 경우 당명 개정 태스크포스(TF)를 구성하고 전문가 검토를 거쳐, 다음 달 설 연휴 이전에 당명 개정 절차를 마무리한다는 방침이다.

정 사무총장은 “장동혁 대표의 ‘이기는 변화’ 신년 기자회견에 따른 후속 조치”라며 “책임당원 조사를 통해 당명 개정을 통한 새로운 시작과 변화에 대한 분명한 열망을 확인했다”고 말했다.

박성훈 수석대변인은 “이번 당명 개정은 단순히 이름을 바꾸는 데 그치지 않고, 새로운 미래와 대한민국을 지탱할 수 있는 야당으로 거듭나기 위한 변화의 출발점”이라며 “지방선거 승리를 향한 전환점으로 봐주길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

책임당원들이 제안한 당명에는 ‘공화’, ‘자유’, ‘미래’ 등의 단어가 다수 포함된 것으로 전해졌다. 박 수석대변인은 “국민과 당원들이 공감하고 실제로 변화를 느낄 수 있는 당명이 최종 선택될 것”이라고 설명했다. 당 색상 변경 여부에 대해서는 “당원들 사이에서는 색상을 유지하자는 의견이 다소 우세한 만큼, 이 부분도 종합적으로 검토할 예정”이라고 덧붙였다.

국민의힘은 과거 한나라당, 새누리당, 자유한국당, 미래통합당을 거쳐 지난 2020년 9월부터 ‘국민의힘’이라는 당명을 사용해 왔다. 이번 결정이 확정될 경우, 약 5년 반 만에 다시 새 이름을 갖게 된다.

한편 장동혁 대표는 다음 주 안으로 인재 영입과 정책 변화 등을 포함한 추가적인 당 쇄신안을 순차적으로 발표할 계획이다.

The People Power Party is moving to change its name ahead of the June 3 local elections as part of a broader party renewal initiative. It's been five years and five months since the party adopted its current name, People Power Party, and a new name is expected to be finalized as early as next month.

People Power Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong met with reporters immediately following the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the morning of the 12th and announced, "In a survey of responsible party members on whether to change the party name, approximately 70% expressed support. The People Power Party has been using the name "People Power" since September 2020, after previously being known as the Grand National Party, Saenuri Party, Liberty Korea Party, and United Future Party.
