국민의힘 윤리위원회가 한동훈 전 대표에 대해 최고 수위인 ‘제명’ 결정을 내렸다. 당원 게시판 여론 조작 의혹이라는 사안의 중대성을 감안하더라도, 이 결정이 던지는 정치적 상징성은 가볍지 않다. 더 아이러니한 것은, 윤석열 대통령에 대한 특검의 사형 구형이 거론되는 날, 정치적 동지였던 한동훈은 당에서 쫓겨났다는 사실이다. 역사는 때로 이렇게 잔인한 풍경을 연출한다.

이번 사안을 둘러싼 여론은 극명하게 갈라져 있다. 찬성은 “법과 원칙”을 말하고, 반대는 “정치 보복”을 주장한다. 보수 언론조차 논조가 엇갈린다. 이는 단순히 한 개인의 징계 문제가 아니라, 국민의힘이 지금 어떤 정당인가, 앞으로 무엇이 될 것인가에 대한 질문이기 때문이다.

분명한 사실 하나는, 국민의힘이 더 이상 과거의 계파 정치, 인물 중심 정치, 진영 내 권력투쟁에 머물러 있을 여유가 없다는 점이다. AI 기술이 산업과 일자리를 재편하고, 지역 소멸과 고령화가 현실이 된 시대에, 보수 정당이 내부 게시판 문제로 수개월을 허비했다는 사실 자체가 국민에게는 무능의 증거로 비친다.

이제 선택은 분명하다. 첫째, 당명부터 바꿔야 한다. ‘국민의힘’이라는 이름은 더 이상 새로움도, 비전도 담지 못한다. 둘째, 한동훈 개인의 제명으로 끝낼 일이 아니다. 그를 둘러싼 세력, 그리고 그 정치 문법 자체를 정리해야 한다. 투항하겠다는 사람은 받아들이되, 조건은 명확해야 한다. 계파 정치 청산, 공개적 책임 인정, 미래 비전에 대한 동의다.

셋째, 장동혁 대표는 머뭇거릴 시간이 없다. 모든 것은 빠르게 결정돼야 한다. 인적 쇄신, 조직 개편, 메시지 전환을 동시에 밀어붙여야 한다. ‘웰니스당’, ‘기득권 보수’ 이미지를 벗지 못하면, 다음 지자체 선거는 준비 이전에 이미 끝난 게임이다.

국민의힘이 살아남으려면, 뛰는 젊은 당으로 변해야 한다. AI·과학기술·국방안보·에너지·지역 혁신을 말할 수 있는 실무형 인재를 전면에 세워야 한다. 말이 아니라 실행, 이념이 아니라 문제 해결 능력으로 평가받는 정당으로 탈바꿈해야 한다.

한동훈 제명은 끝이 아니라 시작이어야 한다. 이 결정을 ‘정치적 숙청’으로 기억하게 할 것인지, 아니면 ‘보수 혁신의 분기점’으로 남길 것인지는 오직 국민의힘 지도부, 특히 장동혁 대표의 결단에 달려 있다. 지금이 바로, 결단의 시간이다.

Han Dong-hoon's Expulsion: The Irony of Conservative Politics... "It's Time for the People Power Party to Decide!"

The People Power Party's Ethics Committee has issued the highest-level decision, "expulsion," against former leader Han Dong-hoon. Even considering the gravity of the allegations of manipulation of public opinion on party member bulletin boards, the political symbolism of this decision is significant. Even more ironic is the fact that Han Dong-hoon, a political ally, was expelled from the party on the same day the special prosecutor's office was considering seeking the death penalty for President Yoon Seok-yeol. History sometimes presents such cruel scenes.

Public opinion surrounding this issue is sharply divided. Those in favor speak of "law and principle," while those against call for "political retaliation." Even conservative media outlets are divided on the issue. This is not simply a matter of disciplinary action against an individual; it questions the very nature of the People Power Party, and what it will become.

One thing is clear: the People Power Party can no longer afford to remain stuck in the factional politics, personality-driven politics, and intra-party power struggles of the past. In an era where AI technology is reshaping industries and jobs, and regional extinction and aging populations are becoming a reality, the very fact that the conservative party has wasted months on internal bulletin board issues is seen by the public as evidence of its incompetence.

The choice is now clear. First, the party must change its name. The name "People Power Party" no longer carries any freshness or vision. Second, the matter cannot end with the expulsion of Han Dong-hoon. The forces surrounding him, and the very political grammar, must be reorganized. Those who surrender must be accepted, but the conditions must be clear: an end to factional politics, public acceptance of responsibility, and agreement on a future vision.

Third, Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk has no time to hesitate. Everything must be decided quickly. He must simultaneously pursue personnel renewal, organizational restructuring, and a shift in message. If the party fails to shed its image as a "wellness party" and a "conservative party with vested interests," the next local elections are already over before preparations are even made.

For the People Power Party to survive, it must transform into a vibrant, young party. It must appoint practical talent capable of advocating for AI, science and technology, national defense and security, energy, and regional innovation. It must transform into a party judged not by words but by action, not by ideology but by problem-solving skills.

Han Dong-hoon's expulsion should be a beginning, not an end. Whether this decision will be remembered as a "political purge" or a "turning point for conservative innovation" depends solely on the decisions of the People Power Party leadership, especially Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk. Now is the time for decisive action.
