[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 지방선거 결과가 확정된 6월 4일, 국민의힘 박형준 부산시장 후보가 더불어민주당 전재수 후보에게 패배했다. 박 후보는 선거 패배를 공식 인정하며 민선 8기 시정을 마무리하고 평시민으로 돌아가겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

이날 선거 패배가 확정된 직후 박 후보는 부산진구 서면에 위치한 자신의 선거캠프를 찾아 입장 발표를 했다. 그는 “그동안 성원에 시민들께 진심으로 감사를 드린다”며 “또 전재수 후보에게 축하의 말씀을 드린다”고 말했다.

이어 향후 부산시정이 마주할 과제에 대해 협력이 필요함을 언급하며, 박 후보는 “우리 부산은 지금 대단히 중요한 시점에 있다”라며 “앞으로도 부산의 미래를 열기 위해서 정말 모두의 협력이 필요하고 또 새로운 길을 모색해 가기를 진심으로 고대한다”고 강조했다.

그는 선거 과정을 함께한 이들과 시민들을 향해 다시 한번 사과의 뜻을 전하며 시장직에서 물러날 준비를 마쳤음을 알렸다. 박 후보는 “그동안 수고해 주신 모든 분들께 다시 한 번 감사드리고 이제 민선 8기 시정을 마무리하고 부산 시민으로 돌아가서 우리 부산 발전을 응원하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

이번 선거 결과는 지난 2022년 지방선거 당시와 비교해 행정 책임자로서의 입지가 크게 변화했음을 보여주었다. 박 후보는 앞서 치러진 당내 경선에서 주진우 의원을 꺾고 본선에 진출했으나, 선거운동 기간 내내 실시된 다수의 여론조사에서 전재수 후보에게 밀리며 고전을 면치 못했다.

과거 재선 당시에는 출범 초기였던 윤석열 정부의 여당 프리미엄과 현역 시장이라는 이점을 안고 높은 지지율을 기록했으나, 정권 교체 이후 치러진 이번 선거에서는 이재명 대통령의 높은 지지율과 국민의힘 내부의 분열이 겹치면서 선거 초반부터 독자적인 동력을 확보하는 데 어려움을 겪었다.

선거 후반기 박 후보 캠프 측은 보수 성향 유권자들의 표심을 결집하기 위해 박근혜, 이명박 전 대통령이 직접 부산을 찾아 지원 유세에 나서는 등 보수 대통합 전략을 시도했다. 그러나 정권 교체 이후 형성된 지역 내 표심의 흐름을 바꾸지 못하면서 결국 최종 선거 패배로 이어졌다.

Park announced that he would step down from his post after concluding his duties for the eighth elective municipality.

Immediately after the election results were finalized, Park visited his campaign headquarters in Seomyeon, Busanjin District, to deliver his official statement. "I express my sincere gratitude to the citizens for their support," Park said. "I also offer my congratulations to candidate Jeon Jae-soo."

Park addressed the broader structural challenges facing the country's second-largest city, emphasizing the need for political cooperation across party lines. "Our Busan is currently at a critical juncture," he said. "To open the future of Busan moving forward, cooperation from everyone is essential, and I sincerely look forward to exploring a new path."

He expressed his appreciation to his staff and reiterating his transition to private life. "I would like to thank everyone who has worked hard once again," Park added. "I will now wrap up my duties for the eighth elective municipality, return to being an ordinary citizen of Busan, and cheer for the development of our city."

The election outcome marked a distinct shift from the 2022 local elections, when Park secured a high level of support driven by the incumbency premium and the momentum of the newly launched Yoon Suk-yeol administration. Although he advanced to the main election this year by defeating Representative Joo Jin-woo in the party primary, his campaign consistently lagged behind Jeon in numerous public opinion polls.

The institutional dynamics of the race had changed significantly following a transition of national power. Park’s campaign faced a highly popular President Lee Jae-myung alongside internal divisions within the People Power Party, complicating his efforts to consolidate voters from the opening weeks of the race.

In the final stretch of the election, Park’s campaign attempted a "grand conservative coalition" strategy to mobilize traditional voters, which included high-profile joint campaign appearances in Busan by former conservative Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak. However, the mobilization of the party's traditional base ultimately proved insufficient to alter the final results of the election.
