[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산국제어린이청소년영화제(BIKY)가 새로운 슬로건과 함께 새로운 10년의 출발을 알렸다.

 

부산국제어린이청소년영화제는 10일 오후 영화의전당 인디플러스에서 기자회견을 열고 오는 7월 8일부터 14일까지 부산 전역에서 개최되는 제21회 영화제의 주요 프로그램과 운영 방향을 공개했다.

 

올해 영화제는 41개국 181편의 작품을 선보인다. 이 가운데 월드 프리미어 42편, 인터내셔널 프리미어 11편, 아시안 프리미어 42편, 코리안 프리미어 36편 등 총 131편이 영화제를 통해 처음 관객과 만난다.

 

새 슬로건 "얘들아 소풍 가자"

이현정 집행위원장은 올해 영화제 슬로건을 '얘들아 소풍 가자'로 정했다고 밝혔다.

 

이 위원장은 "21회를 맞은 비키는 앞으로의 10년을 준비하는 마음으로 새로운 슬로건을 마련했다"며 "오늘날 아이들에게 가장 절실한 다정한 여백을 선물하고자 했다"고 설명했다.

 

이어 "목적 없이 친구들과 마음껏 웃고 떠들 수 있는 일상 속 소풍처럼 누구나 해방감과 즐거움을 누릴 수 있는 따뜻한 경험의 장이 되길 바란다"며 "영화제가 편히 기대어 쉴 수 있는 마법 같은 소통의 자리가 되기를 소망한다"고 말했다.

부산 전역으로 확장된 영화제

올해 영화제는 영화의전당을 중심으로 영화진흥위원회 표준시사실, 부산시청자미디어센터, 롯데시네마 부산명지점 등으로 상영 공간을 확대한다.

 

특히 어린이·청소년 창작영화 경쟁부문인 '레디액션'을 부산시청자미디어센터 전용관 형태로 운영하고 상영 횟수를 기존 1회에서 2회로 늘려 참가 감독과 관객 간 소통 기회를 확대한다.

 

이 위원장은 "부산 전역의 관객들과 만나는 확장된 영화제 경험을 제공할 것"이라며 "국내외 어린이·청소년 감독들이 교류하고 우정을 나눌 수 있는 공간을 조성하겠다"고 밝혔다.

 

역대 최대 규모 GV·신규 토크 프로그램 운영

올해 영화제는 역대 가장 많은 관객과의 대화(GV)를 준비했다. 또 다양한 분야 전문가들과 만날 수 있는 신규 토크 프로그램 '비키 잡학사전'을 처음 선보인다.

 

이 위원장은 "생각의 즐거움과 나눔의 즐거움, 만남의 즐거움을 경험할 수 있는 비키의 새로운 시그니처 프로그램이 될 것"이라고 기대했다.

야외 상영 유료화…'소풍데이' 운영

영화제는 관람 환경 개선을 위해 야외 상영 프로그램을 처음으로 유료화한다. 금·토·일 사흘간 'DAY DAY DAY' 프로그램을 운영하며 관객 맞춤형 패키지와 특별 상영을 결합한 새로운 형태의 야외 프로그램을 선보일 예정이다.

 

특히 7월 11일은 '소풍데이'로 지정해 영화 '굿 윌 헌팅'을 상영한다. 교원증을 지참한 교사는 동반 4인까지 무료 입장이 가능하다. 또 청소년들이 직접 참여하는 오픈마이크 형식의 포럼을 개최해 교육과 소풍에 대한 다양한 의견을 나눌 예정이다.

 

이상용 수석 프로그래머는 "어른들의 이야기는 많이 들었지만 정작 아이들의 생각을 들을 기회는 많지 않았다"며 "청소년들이 직접 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 있는 자리가 될 것"이라고 말했다.

 

경쟁 부문 확대·한국 단편 공모 신설

영화제 대표 경쟁 부문인 '레디액션'에서는 어린이·청소년 영화인들이 직접 제작한 작품들을 선보인다. 또한, 성인이 제작한 어린이·청소년 영화를 대상으로 하는 '마음의 별빛' 경쟁 부문을 독립 섹션으로 운영해 장편 8편을 상영한다.

 

한국 단편 경쟁 부문인 '새로운 별빛'도 본격적으로 공모제를 도입했다. 올해는 480여 편의 작품이 접수돼 높은 관심을 입증했으며 최종 21편이 선정됐다. 이 프로그래머는 "비키가 21회를 맞아 보다 안정적인 경쟁 플랫폼을 구축해 가고 있다"고 평가했다.

 

네덜란드 특별전·윤가은 감독 인포커스

올해 특별전에서는 최근 제작된 네덜란드 어린이영화 장편 7편과 단편 4편을 소개하고, 프랑스 클레르몽페랑 영화제 키즈·패밀리 섹션 상영작 22편을 모은 특별전도 마련된다.

인포커스 부문은 윤가은 감독을 집중 조명한다. 장편 전작과 주요 단편, 특별 상영작을 소개하며 감독과의 대화 및 마스터클래스도 진행한다. 특히 윤 감독이 직접 선정한 1990년대 어린이영화도 상영되며, 이준익 감독이 참석해 특별 대담을 진행할 예정이다.

 

AI 특별전 강화…미래 세대 영화교육 확대

올해 영화제의 가장 큰 특징 중 하나는 AI 프로그램 확대다. 지난해에 이어 AI 특별전을 운영하는 것은 물론, AI 관련 대담과 영화 제작 워크숍도 함께 진행한다. 참가자들은 영화제 기간 동안 AI를 활용해 영화를 제작하고, 완성작은 폐막 시상식에서 상영될 예정이다.

 

어린이·청소년 경쟁 부문 내에 AI 섹션을 신설해 미래 세대의 새로운 창작 환경을 적극 반영했다. 이상용 프로그래머는 "AI가 이미 우리 사회의 기본값이 된 시대"라며 "어린이와 청소년들이 직접 경험하고 창작할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 중요하다"고 강조했다.

 

개막작, 네팔 소녀들의 삶 담은 다큐로 문 연다

윤가은 감독 인포커스·AI 특별전·야외 상영 프로그램 강화

올해 개막작은 프랑스 출신 알렉산더 머피 감독의 다큐멘터리다. 90분 분량의 이 작품은 네팔 산간지역 소녀들의 삶을 따라가며 교육과 문화적 혜택에서 소외된 현실을 조명한다. 주인공들은 히말라야 고산지대에서 귀한 약재인 동충하초를 채취하며 미래를 준비한다. 영화는 이 과정에서 가정폭력과 빈곤, 성장의 아픔 등을 자연스럽게 풀어낸다.

 

이상용 수석 프로그래머는 "어린이·청소년을 둘러싼 사회적 이슈가 많은 시기에 어떤 작품을 보여주는 것이 의미 있을지 고민했다"며 "우리와는 다른 현실 속에 살아가는 아이들의 삶을 통해 관객들이 세계를 바라보는 새로운 시선을 얻기를 바란다"고 말했다.

 

이어 "알렉산더 머피 감독은 최근 칸영화제 비평가주간에 신작이 소개될 정도로 주목받는 감독"이라며 "영화제 기간 중 부산을 찾아 관객들과 직접 만날 예정"이라고 밝혔다.

경쟁 부문 확대…AI 크리에이티브 신설

영화제 대표 경쟁 부문인 '레디액션'은 올해 AI 크리에이티브 부문을 새롭게 포함하며 규모를 확대했다.

 

국내외 어린이·청소년 창작자들이 직접 제작한 작품들이 상영되며 해외 참가자들도 대거 부산을 찾는다. 일부 작품은 40명 규모의 제작진과 출연진이 함께 영화제를 방문할 예정이다.

 

성인이 제작한 어린이·청소년 영화를 대상으로 하는 '마음의 별빛' 경쟁 부문은 해외 작품 7편과 국내 작품 1편 등 총 8편으로 구성된다.

 

한국 단편 경쟁 부문인 '새로운 별빛'에서는 어린이와 청소년을 주인공으로 한 다양한 작품들이 소개된다. 선정작 가운데는 국내 주요 영화제에서 주목받은 작품들도 포함돼 있다.

 

국내외 전문가 참여 심사위원단 구성

올해 심사위원단에는 국내외 영화 전문가들이 참여한다. 마음의 별빛상 심사에는 네덜란드 애니메이션 감독 마를리스 반 데르 벨, 대만국제어린이영화제 집행위원장 고관림을 비롯해 배우 겸 감독 이주승, 장건재 감독, 장병원 평론가가 참여한다.

 

새로운 별빛상 심사위원으로는 일본의 영화교육 전문가 후지와라 안나, 애니메이션 감독 안재훈, 배우 이지원이 위촉됐다.

 

윤가은 감독 집중 조명

올해 인포커스 프로그램은 윤가은 감독을 선정했다. BIKY는 윤 감독의 장편과 단편 전작을 상영하는 한편 감독과의 대화, 마스터클래스도 진행한다.

특히 윤 감독이 직접 선정한 1990년대 한국 어린이영화 3편도 함께 상영된다. 이를 통해 한국 어린이영화의 흐름과 변화를 살펴보는 기회를 제공할 예정이다.

 

네덜란드 특별전·AI 특별전 마련

특별전에서는 최근 네덜란드 어린이영화의 흐름을 조명하는 장편 7편과 단편 4편을 선보인다. 어린이와 어른의 관계, 가족과 성장, 사회적 다양성 등을 다룬 작품들이 관객과 만난다.

 

AI 특별전도 한층 강화됐다. 영화제는 고등학생들이 제작한 AI 영화들을 소개하는 한편, AI 영화 제작 워크숍과 특별 상영을 함께 진행한다. 이를 통해 국내 청소년 창작자들의 AI 활용 역량과 새로운 영화 제작 가능성을 보여줄 계획이다. 이밖에 프랑스 클레르몽페랑 국제단편영화제 상영작을 소개하는 특별전도 마련된다.

 

달빛극장, '데이데이데이'로 새 단장

BIKY의 대표 야외 프로그램인 달빛극장은 올해 '데이데이데이(DAY DAY DAY)'라는 새로운 브랜드로 운영된다. 7월 10일 '킹스데이'에는 영화 '킹 오브 킹스'가 상영되며, 11일 '소풍데이'에는 '굿 윌 헌팅'이 관객을 만난다.

 

12일 '댕댕데이'에는 반려견과 함께 영화를 관람할 수 있는 특별 상영이 마련된다. 상영작은 오성윤 감독의 애니메이션 '길 위의 뭉치'다.

 

영화제 측은 "여름밤 야외 공간에서 영화와 휴식, 체험을 함께 즐길 수 있는 특별한 경험을 선사할 예정"이라고 밝혔다.

 

정재승·박정민·선재스님 등 특별 강연

신설 프로그램인 '비키 잡학사전'에는 다양한 분야의 전문가들이 참여한다. 과학자 정재승 교수, 배우이자 출판사 대표인 박정민, 선재스님, 국내 최초 여성 로펌 대표 변호사, 야구해설위원 정훈 등이 강연과 대담을 통해 관객들과 만난다.

 

영화제는 이 프로그램을 통해 어린이와 청소년들이 영화를 넘어 다양한 직업과 삶의 경험을 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 계획이다.

심화 프로그램도 눈길

영화제는 축제성과 함께 교육적·예술적 깊이를 강화하기 위한 심화 프로그램도 마련했다. 윤가은 감독 작품세계를 분석하는 마스터클래스와 함께 이란 거장 압바스 키아로스타미의 어린이영화 세계를 집중 조명하는 '키아로스타미 어린이 여행기' 강좌가 진행된다.

 

이상용 수석 프로그래머는 "영화제가 축제의 장인 동시에 깊이 있는 영화 교육의 공간이 되기를 바란다"며 "관객들이 다양한 스펙트럼의 프로그램을 경험할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.

 

폐막식 및 시상식은 7월 14일 오후 2시 강서구 낙동아트센터 앙상블극장에서 열리며, 주요 경쟁 부문 수상작 발표와 함께 영화제의 대미를 장식할 예정이다.

The Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival (BIKY) has unveiled a new slogan and vision as it embarks on its next decade of growth.

 

Festival organizers announced the major programs and operational plans for the 21st edition of BIKY during a press conference held on June 10 at Indieplus in the Busan Cinema Center. The festival will take place across Busan from July 8 to 14.

 

This year's festival will present 181 films from 41 countries. The lineup includes 42 World Premieres, 11 International Premieres, 42 Asian Premieres, and 36 Korean Premieres, bringing the total number of premiere screenings to 131.

 

New Festival Theme: "Kids, Let's Go on a Picnic"

BIKY Executive Director Lee Hyun-jung introduced this year's festival slogan, "Kids, Let's Go on a Picnic."

 

"As we celebrate our 21st edition, we wanted to prepare for the next decade with a new vision," Lee said. "We hope to offer children something they need most today—a warm and welcoming space where they can simply enjoy being themselves."

 

She added, "Like a carefree picnic with friends, we hope the festival will become a place where everyone can experience a sense of freedom, joy, and connection. We want BIKY to be a magical space for communication, comfort, and shared experiences."

 

Festival Expands Across Busan

This year's festival will broaden its footprint beyond the Busan Cinema Center, utilizing additional venues including the Korean Film Council Screening Room, Busan Media Center for Audiences, and Lotte Cinema Busan Myeongji.

 

In particular, Ready Action, the festival's competition section dedicated to films made by children and youth, will be operated as a dedicated venue at the Busan Media Center for Audiences. Screening opportunities will be expanded from one to two screenings per film, allowing participating filmmakers more opportunities to engage with audiences.

 

"We want to provide audiences throughout Busan with an expanded festival experience," Lee said. "We are also creating spaces where young filmmakers from Korea and abroad can meet, exchange ideas, and build lasting friendships."

 

Record Number of Guest Talks and New Talk Series

BIKY will host its largest-ever lineup of Guest Visits (GVs), giving audiences unprecedented opportunities to interact with filmmakers.

 

The festival will also launch a new talk program titled BIKY Encyclopedia, bringing together experts and professionals from various fields.

 

"We hope this will become one of BIKY's signature events, offering the joy of learning, sharing, and meaningful encounters," Lee said.

 

Outdoor Screenings Introduce "Picnic Day"

To improve audience experience and screening quality, BIKY will introduce ticketed outdoor screenings for the first time.

 

A new outdoor program, DAY DAY DAY, will run over three days, combining themed screenings with customized audience experiences.

 

July 11 has been designated as Picnic Day, featuring a screening of Good Will Hunting. Teachers presenting valid identification will receive free admission for themselves and up to four accompanying guests.

 

The day will also include an open-mic forum led by young people, providing a platform for children and teenagers to share their perspectives on education, community, and everyday life.

 

"We hear adults' opinions all the time, but rarely have the chance to listen directly to young people," said Chief Programmer Lee Sang-yong. "This program is designed to give them a voice."

 

Expanded Competition Sections

Ready Action, BIKY's flagship competition section, will continue to showcase films created by children and youth filmmakers from around the world.

 

The Mind's Starlight competition section, dedicated to films about children and youth made by adult filmmakers, has been established as an independent competition category and will feature eight feature-length films.

 

Meanwhile, New Starlight, the Korean short-film competition, has officially adopted an open submission system. More than 480 films were submitted this year, with 21 titles ultimately selected for competition.

 

"As BIKY marks its 21st edition, we are steadily building a more sustainable and robust competition platform," Lee said.

 

Dutch Cinema Spotlight and Yoon Ga-eun Retrospective

This year's special programs include a showcase of contemporary Dutch children's cinema featuring seven feature films and four short films.

 

The festival will also present a special selection of 22 films from the Kids & Family section of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.

 

The In Focus program will spotlight acclaimed Korean filmmaker Yoon Ga-eun. Audiences will have the opportunity to watch her feature and short films, attend conversations with the director, and participate in a special masterclass.

 

In addition, Yoon has personally selected several Korean children's films from the 1990s for screening. Director Lee Joon-ik is also expected to participate in a special discussion session.

 

Expanded AI Programs for Future Generations

One of the festival's most notable developments this year is the expansion of its AI-related programming.

 

In addition to an AI Special Program, BIKY will host discussions, workshops, and hands-on filmmaking initiatives centered on artificial intelligence.

 

Participants will create AI-assisted films during the festival, and the completed works will be screened during the closing awards ceremony.

 

The festival has also introduced a dedicated AI category within the youth competition section, reflecting the rapidly evolving creative environment facing younger generations.

 

"AI has already become part of everyday life," Lee said. "It is important to provide children and young people with opportunities to explore, experience, and create with these emerging technologies."

 

BIKY to Open with Documentary on Nepali Girls’ Lives

Festival Expands AI Programs, Outdoor Screenings, and Special Focus on Director Yoon Ga-eun

Opening Film Explores the Lives of Nepali Girls This year's opening film is a documentary by French filmmaker Alexandre Murphy.

 

Running approximately 90 minutes, the film follows the lives of young girls living in remote mountainous regions of Nepal, shedding light on communities with limited access to education and cultural opportunities. The protagonists journey into the Himalayas to collect valuable caterpillar fungus, a highly prized medicinal resource, in hopes of building a better future. Along the way, the film sensitively explores themes of poverty, domestic violence, resilience, and personal growth.

 

Chief Programmer Lee Sang-yong said the festival carefully considered what kind of film would be most meaningful in today's social climate.

 

"At a time when issues concerning children and youth are receiving increasing attention, we wanted to present a film that broadens perspectives," Lee said. "We hope audiences will gain a deeper understanding of young people whose realities differ greatly from our own."

 

Lee also noted that Murphy has emerged as one of the most promising young filmmakers in international cinema, with his latest work recently screened at Critics' Week in Cannes. The director is expected to attend the festival and meet audiences in Busan.

 

Competition Sections Expanded with New AI Creative Category

BIKY's flagship youth competition section, Ready Action, has expanded this year with the introduction of a new AI Creative category.

 

The section will showcase films made by children and young people from around the world, with many international participants expected to attend. Some productions will bring entire creative teams of up to 40 members to the festival.

 

The Mind's Starlight competition section, dedicated to films about children and youth made by adult filmmakers, will feature eight films, including seven international titles and one Korean production.

 

Meanwhile, New Starlight, the Korean short-film competition, will present a diverse selection of works centered on children and adolescent protagonists. Several of the selected films have already gained recognition at major domestic film festivals.

 

International Jury Lineup Announced

The festival has assembled an international panel of film professionals to evaluate this year's competition entries.

 

The Mind's Starlight jury includes Dutch animator and illustrator Marlies van der Wel, Taiwan International Children's Film Festival Executive Director Kao Kuan-lin, actor-director Lee Ju-seung, filmmaker Jang Kun-jae, and film critic Jang Byeong-won.

 

The New Starlight jury features Japanese film educator Fujiwara Anna, acclaimed animation director Ahn Jae-hoon, and actress Lee Ji-won.

 

Spotlight on Director Yoon Ga-eun

This year's In Focus program will celebrate the work of acclaimed Korean filmmaker Yoon Ga-eun.

 

The festival will screen Yoon's complete filmography, including both feature and short films, alongside conversations with the director and a special masterclass.

 

In addition, Yoon has selected three Korean children's films from the 1990s, offering audiences an opportunity to revisit an important era in the history of Korean youth cinema.

 

Special Sections Highlight Dutch Cinema and AI Filmmaking

The Dutch Special Program will introduce audiences to seven feature films and four short films that reflect contemporary trends in children's cinema from the Netherlands.

 

The selected works explore themes such as family relationships, childhood development, diversity, and the connections between children and adults.

 

BIKY's AI Special Program has also been significantly expanded this year.

The program will showcase AI-generated films created by high school students while offering workshops and special screenings dedicated to emerging filmmaking technologies. Organizers hope the initiative will demonstrate the growing creative potential of young Korean filmmakers working with artificial intelligence.

 

The festival will also present a special selection of films from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, one of the world's leading showcases for short-form cinema.

 

Outdoor Screening Program Reimagined as "DAY DAY DAY"

BIKY's signature outdoor screening event, previously known as Moonlight Cinema, returns this year under a new brand identity: DAY DAY DAY.

 

Each evening will feature a different theme.

King's Day on July 10 will present The King of Kings, while Picnic Day on July 11 will feature the beloved classic Good Will Hunting.

 

Dog Day on July 12 will invite audiences to enjoy a film together with their pets. The featured title will be Bundle of Joy, directed by Oh Seong-yoon, known internationally for Underdog and Leafie, A Hen into the Wild.

 

Festival organizers said the outdoor program is designed to provide audiences with a unique summer experience combining cinema, relaxation, and community participation.

 

BIKY Encyclopedia Brings Diverse Voices to the Festival

A newly launched talk series titled BIKY Encyclopedia will bring together distinguished figures from various fields.

 

Participants include neuroscientist Chung Jae-seung, actor and publisher Park Jung-min, Buddhist monk Sunjae, a pioneering female law-firm founder, and football commentator Park Moon-sung.

 

The program aims to expose children and young people to a wide range of professional experiences, perspectives, and life stories beyond the world of cinema.

 

Educational Programs Add Depth to Festival Experience

Alongside its celebratory atmosphere, BIKY continues to strengthen its educational and artistic mission.

 

A masterclass dedicated to the filmmaking philosophy of Yoon Ga-eun will offer audiences deeper insight into her creative approach and portrayal of childhood.

 

The festival will also host "Kiarostami's Journey Through Childhood," a lecture series exploring the works of renowned Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami and his contributions to children's cinema.

 

"While the festival is a celebration, it is also a place for meaningful film education and cultural exchange," Lee Sang-yong said. "We hope audiences will discover the breadth and diversity of experiences that BIKY has to offer."

 

The Closing Ceremony and Awards Ceremony will be held at '2:00 p.m. on July 14' at the 'Ensemble Theater of the Nakdong Art Center' in Gangseo-gu, Busan, where winners of the festival's major competition sections will be announced, bringing the 21st Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival to a close.
