[Here is the English version of the article] Busan Activates Disaster Response Headquarters After Fishing Boat Collides with LPG Carrier, Leaving 1 Dead and 2 Missing

The city of Busan has fully activated its disaster response headquarters and is channeling all available administrative resources into recovery efforts following a collision between a fishing vessel and an LPG carrier that caused the fishing boat to sink off the coast of Gijang County.

At approximately 10:10 AM on the 25th, the Miju No. 3, a 79-ton trawler, collided with a 992-ton LPG carrier in waters 23 nautical miles (about 42 kilometers) east of Daebyeon Harbor in Gijang County, Busan. The impact caused the Miju No. 3 to sink, throwing all eight crew members on board into the sea. The crew consisted of two South Korean nationals and six Indonesian nationals.

By the time the Korea Coast Guard arrived on the scene after receiving the emergency call, the fishing vessel was already partially capsized and completely sank shortly thereafter. Immediately following the collision, the LPG carrier managed to rescue six of the crew members. However, the captain, a South Korean national in his 60s who was pulled from the water in a state of cardiac arrest, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital. Two Indonesian crew members in their 30s remain missing, and their condition is currently unknown.

The Ulsan Coast Guard has deployed three aircraft and 15 vessels to conduct an extensive search and rescue operation around the crash site. However, rescue efforts are facing severe difficulties due to deteriorating weather conditions, including high waves and strong winds.

Meanwhile, Busan City held an emergency response meeting at 3:00 PM on the 25th at the City Hall's Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters. Presided over by Mayor Park Heong-joon, the meeting was called to establish multi-faceted response strategies for the collision and sinking.

The meeting brought together experts and officials from various relevant agencies, including the marine affairs, disaster safety, and welfare support departments, as well as the police and fire services. Participants closely reviewed the details of the accident and the status of casualties, while evaluating the personnel and resources required for a swift search operation to locate the missing crew.

To ensure seamless coordination on the ground, Busan City has dispatched field liaison officers to Daebyeon Harbor. The city has also identified the hospitals where the injured and the families of the missing are staying, assigning dedicated public officials to each family on a one-on-one basis to monitor and address their immediate needs.

Furthermore, the city plans to provide tailored psychological counseling and mental health relief programs through its Disaster Psychological Recovery Support initiative to help victims, their families, and on-site responders cope with the trauma. For the Indonesian crew members, who make up the majority of the victims, the city is offering urgent interpretation services alongside comprehensive relief measures to support a swift recovery.

Mayor Park expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and their families, emphasizing that the city will maintain a tight공조 framework with the central government, Yeongdo District, Gijang County, and the Coast Guard. He ordered all relevant departments to exhaust every administrative capability to support the recovery efforts, minimize public anxiety, and ensure a swift and precise response.
