To mark the first anniversary of its designation as the 2028 World Design Capital (WDC), the Busan Metropolitan Government has unveiled the "Busan Sea Pizza (WDC PIZZA)," a collaborative creation with the city's iconic local pizza brand, Lee Jae-mo Pizza.
The project combines Busan's maritime identity with regional cuisine, offering residents and visitors a unique way to experience the city's design vision through food.
The Busan Metropolitan Government officially introduced the Busan Sea Pizza during a launch event held on July 21 at Lee Jae-mo Pizza's Seomyeon Central branch.
The initiative celebrates the first anniversary of Busan's selection as the 2028 World Design Capital and reflects the city's efforts to integrate design into everyday life by reimagining local food culture. Developed through a public-private partnership, the project aims to strengthen Busan's city brand while creating engaging experiences for both residents and tourists.
Around 80 guests attended the event, including Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo, executives from Lee Jae-mo Pizza, local business leaders, young professionals, and employees with disabilities.
The ceremony opened with congratulatory video messages from representatives of the World Design Organization (WDO) and promotional ambassador Lee Junho, followed by presentations on the concept behind the new menu, a commemorative performance, and a tasting session.
The Busan Sea Pizza is the first seafood-based signature pizza ever developed by Lee Jae-mo Pizza since the company was founded. It features premium fish cake made from 100 percent Alaska pollock supplied by Goraesa Fish Cake, complemented by Busan's famous salted pollock roe and locally grown green onions from Gijang.
Designed to capture the spirit of the city, the fish cake is shaped to resemble the rolling waves of Gwangalli Beach, while generous seafood toppings reflect Busan's identity as Korea's leading maritime city.
The accompanying beverage, "WDC Midnight Purple," blends red, symbolizing the passion of Busan's citizens, with blue, representing inclusion and connection, to create the signature purple color of Busan 2028 World Design Capital.
To celebrate the launch, Busan will host promotional events from July 22 through August 31. Participants who upload photos or videos of themselves enjoying the Busan Sea Pizza to the official WDC Busan Instagram account will be entered into a drawing, with 50 winners receiving vouchers for a large pizza. Customers purchasing the new menu at participating stores will also receive a limited-edition magnetic souvenir jointly produced by WDC Busan and Lee Jae-mo Pizza while supplies last.
Building on this collaboration, the city plans to expand partnerships with local brands to create more design-driven initiatives that support sustainable regional growth. Busan also intends to connect the project with food influencers, tourism programs, and cruise travel experiences to further establish itself as a global destination where design, culture, and gastronomy come together.
Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said, "The goal of Busan's World Design Capital initiative is to discover and spread the value of design in citizens' everyday lives. By working closely with local businesses, we will continue to develop creative partnerships that enhance the city's unique identity and global appeal."
