[Here is the English version of the article] "IBS Global Monsoon System Conference" Opens... "Overcoming Sea Surface Temperature Bias is the Key Challenge in Climate Prediction"

=Prof. Axel Timmermann: "Expecting to deepen academic understanding of the monsoon system and serve as an opportunity to address shared human challenges"

The IBS Conference on Global Monsoon Systems, where climate scientists from around the world gather to discuss global monsoon variability and the impacts of climate change, opened on the 10th.

Held from the 10th to the 13th at Paradise Hotel Busan, this international academic conference was organized to conduct an in-depth analysis of global monsoon system variability and predictability, and to identify the effects of natural and anthropogenic climate change on monsoons. World-renowned researchers from diverse fields—including atmospheric science, climate modeling, hydrology, and paleoclimatology—attended to share the latest research findings and discuss future directions for international joint research.

Axel Timmermann, Director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) and Distinguished Professor at Pusan National University, stressed in his welcoming remarks the importance of international cooperation and climate prediction research to overcome the global climate crisis. He stated, "I hope this event deepens our academic understanding of the monsoon system and serves as an opportunity to resolve shared challenges facing humanity."

Director Timmermann noted, "Unprecedented extreme climate phenomena are occurring one after another, such as Busan recently observing heatwaves approaching 42 degrees Celsius—the highest in its 122-year observation history. Wildfires are raging across the globe in countries like Spain, Greece, Canada, and the United States, while one of the strongest El Niño events on record is developing early. How these climate change trends will evolve in the future and how society should respond to extreme weather phenomena are core topics to be addressed at this conference."

He went on to emphasize the need for physical understanding and predictive modeling to solve climate issues. "To accurately forecast future climate, a physical understanding of the climate system and skilled predictive capabilities are essential," he said. "I look forward to global research teams collaborating to solve climate change, the greatest challenge in human history."

He also added, "This event marks the fourth IBS Climate Conference following those on past climate and human migration, hydrogen, biodiversity, and human evolution, and it serves as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Center for Climate Physics. It is deeply meaningful to gather again for the same purpose about nine years after hosting our first conference. Furthermore, we have arranged beneficial opportunities, including an evening reception, to promote fellowship beyond academic exchange."

Wishing success for the four-day academic conference, Director Timmermann expressed, "I hope this conference deepens our understanding of the East Asian environment and monsoon system and leaves a memorable impression. During the event, I hope attendees take the opportunity to look around Busan's beautiful scenery, including the 100-story LCT Observatory and the Coastal Train."

Prof. Bin Wang: "Northern Hemisphere monsoon variability relies on internal feedback and radiative forcing" ... Diagnosing sea surface temperature (SST) bias as a major obstacle in climate prediction

Following the opening, Professor Emeritus Bin Wang from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Hawaii delivered the first keynote address, titled "Global Monsoon Response to External Forcing and Internal Feedback." He elucidated the multi-timescale dynamical mechanisms causing variability in Northern Hemisphere land monsoon precipitation and presented challenges to enhance the accuracy of future climate predictions.

He has made immense contributions over several decades to broadening humanity's understanding of climate dynamics, variability, and changes in the global climate system.

"Pacific and Atlantic SST patterns drive multi-decadal variability"

Professor Bin Wang presented Sea Surface Temperature (SST) patterns as the core driver triggering multi-decadal variability in Northern Hemisphere land monsoon precipitation.

He explained, "Analyzing SST patterns associated with Northern Hemisphere land monsoon precipitation reveals that Pacific Mega-ENSO, Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), and Indian Ocean thermal contrast act as the main drivers." He further stated, "Analysis of 500-year pre-industrial control simulations confirmed that internal feedback processes govern these multi-decadal oscillations."

Prof. Wang noted, "As CMIP6 decadal prediction models succeed to a certain degree in predicting AMO variability and its corresponding climate response, long-term predictability for Northern Hemisphere land monsoon precipitation is also being demonstrated."

"Solar activity and volcanic eruptions induce long-term monsoon changes"

Prof. Wang explained that natural external forcing played a critical role in long-term climate change over the past millennium.

"In centennial-scale climate variability, solar variability and large volcanic eruptions drove changes in global mean temperature," he said. "Global monsoon precipitation responded very sensitively to these temperature fluctuations."

In particular, he emphasized, "Solar radiative forcing does not merely alter mean temperatures; it significantly enhances interhemispheric and land-ocean thermal contrasts. Changes in global monsoon precipitation serve as an exceptionally sensitive indicator reflecting climate change caused by external radiative forcing."

"Rapid climate oscillations confirmed since the last Ice Age"

Prof. Wang introduced millennial-scale climate variability mechanisms spanning from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Holocene. Citing speleothem records from Hulu Cave in East Asia and caves in South America as examples, he explained that "distinct, rapid past climate oscillations are clearly evident."

He continued, "These changes are closely linked to ocean heat transport alterations driven by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)." He explained that Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, occurring roughly every 1,500 years, acted as the key mechanism behind these climate fluctuations.

"Orbital changes also enhance monsoons"

Changes in Earth's orbit were also presented as a primary cause of long-term monsoon changes. Prof. Wang explained, "Precession, obliquity, and eccentricity variations regulate seasonal insolation."

He noted, "In the Mid-Holocene, increased summer insolation in high-latitude regions strengthened the thermal contrast between land and ocean, resulting in strong monsoon responses." He added, "On the longest geological timescales, tectonic uplift and land-sea reconfiguration restructured regional monsoon patterns."

"Aerosol forcing is also a key variable"

During the Q&A session, questions followed regarding the role of aerosols in global monsoon changes. Prof. Wang answered, "Although I could not cover it in detail due to time constraints, aerosol forcing is an extremely important dynamical component."

Discussions also took place regarding differences in regional monsoon responses due to anthropogenic forcing. Prof. Wang explained, "Unlike other monsoon regions, moisture budget analysis for the East Asian monsoon demonstrates that horizontal moisture advection plays a fundamental role in precipitation changes."

"SST bias is the greatest uncertainty in future monsoon projections"

The issue of SST bias in climate models then emerged as a major topic of discussion. One attendee asked whether climate models commonly misrepresenting El Niño-like SST background changes could cause distortions in future monsoon projections.

In response, Prof. Wang diagnosed, "Most climate models fail to accurately reproduce historically observed SST trends. This uncertainty in SST response stands as one of the greatest hurdles in future monsoon forecasting."

"The East Asian monsoon is a unique extratropical system"

Discussion continued on the spatial characteristics of the East Asian monsoon. In response to an inquiry on whether the extension of the East Asian monsoon beyond the tropics is due to the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool or the scale and topography of the Asian continent, Prof. Wang explained, "The strong thermal contrast between the massive Asian continent and the Pacific Ocean, combined with topographic forcing, forms a unique subtropical and extratropical monsoon system distinct from typical tropical monsoons."

Additionally, during the morning session, Professor Fei-Fei Jin from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa delivered a keynote address on the seasonal and annual variability and predictability of the global monsoon system from an XRO perspective. In the afternoon session, Professor Renhe Zhang from Fudan University (Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences / Institute of Atmospheric Sciences) gave a keynote speech titled "Decadal Changes in the Impact of the East Asian Winter Monsoon on El Niño: The Role of the Arctic Oscillation."

The day's sessions consisted of two keynote lectures structured as 25-minute presentations followed by 5-minute Q&A periods, alongside four general oral presentations. From 6 PM onwards, a welcome reception and a celebration for the 10th anniversary of the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) took place.
