브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 세계 최대 규모의 자동제어 분야 국제학술대회인 ‘제23차 국제자동제어연맹(IFAC) 세계대회’가 18년 만에 한국을 찾아, 오는 23일부터 부산 벡스코에서 열린다.

해외 전문가 3,600여 명을 포함해 역대 최대 규모인 4,400여 명이 참가하는 이번 행사에서는 세계적 석학들의 학술 강연과 경연대회를 비롯해 시민 대상 무료 특강, 청소년 로봇 체험 프로그램 등이 6일간 펼쳐진다. 

부산시는 오는 23일부터 28일까지 6일간 벡스코에서 국제자동제어연맹이 주최하고 (사)제어로봇시스템학회가 주관하는 '제23차 국제자동제어연맹 세계대회(IFAC World Congress 2026)'를 개최한다고 밝혔다. 1957년 창설 이후 3년마다 열리는 이 대회는 자동제어 분야에서 가장 권위 있는 학술행사로, 국내 개최는 2008년 서울 대회 이후 18년 만이다.

이번 대회에는 75개국 이상에서 4,400여 명이 참가를 등록해 역대 최대 규모로 치러질 예정이다. 공식 개회식은 오는 23일 오후 5시 30분 벡스코 오디토리움에서 부산시립무용단의 오고무·풍물놀이 공연으로 시작해 영화의전당 드론 라이트쇼 및 환영 리셉션으로 이어진다.

주요 학술 세션 및 경연대회

대회 기간 벡스코 내 37개 회의실에서는 9개 주제, 39개 기술 분과를 중심으로 전체회의와 워크숍, 논문 발표, 전시회가 진행된다. 켄 골드버그(Ken Goldberg) UC 버클리 교수를 비롯한 세계적 석학 5인의 기조강연과 37개 동시세션이 진행되며, 로보레이서 그랑프리·미니드론·웨어러블 로봇 챌린지 등 학생 대상 기술 경연대회도 함께 마련된다.

청소년 체험 및 시민 대상 무료 특별 강연

시민과 청소년이 직접 체험할 수 있는 연계 프로그램도 다채롭다. 오는 22일 중학생 30명을 대상으로 한 ‘AI 로봇팔 체험 워크숍’을 시작으로, 26일에는 초·중학생 60여 명이 참여하는 로봇 공연 및 제작 체험 행사(IFAC Young Robot Explorers)가 운영된다.

특히 오는 24일 오후 7시 30분 벡스코 오디토리움에서는 시민 누구나 무료로 참가할 수 있는 특별 강연 「미래를 여는 AI와 로봇」이 열린다. 연사로 나서는 켄 골드버그 교수는 ‘피지컬 인공지능: 우리 미래의 AI와 로봇’을 주제로 강연을 진행하며, AI 기반 한국어 실시간 자막이 제공된다. 참가는 포스터 QR코드 사전 신청 또는 현장 등록을 통해 가능하다.

폐회식은 오는 28일 오후 4시 백윤학 지휘자의 오케스트라 공연과 시상식, 차기 개최지인 네덜란드 ‘IFAC 2029’ 소개를 끝으로 일정을 마무리한다.

[Here is the English version of the article]  World-Renowned Robotics Experts Gather in Busan for the 23rd IFAC World Congress

The 23rd World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), the world’s largest international conference in the field of automatic control, will be held at BEXCO in Busan from August 23 to 28, marking the event’s return to South Korea 18 years after it was last held in Seoul.

More than 4,400 participants from over 75 countries, including some 3,600 international experts, are expected to attend the six-day event, making it the largest IFAC World Congress ever. The program will feature keynote lectures by leading scholars, technical competitions, free public lectures, and hands-on robotics programs for young people.

The official opening ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. on August 23 at the BEXCO Auditorium with performances by the Busan Metropolitan Dance Company, including traditional Korean drum and folk performances. The ceremony will be followed by a drone light show presented by the Busan Cinema Center and a welcome reception.

The City of Busan announced that it will host IFAC World Congress 2026 from August 23 to 28 at BEXCO. Organized by the International Federation of Automatic Control and hosted by the Society of Control, Robotics and Systems, Korea, the congress is held every three years and is regarded as the most prestigious international academic event in the field of automatic control. The event is returning to Korea for the first time since the 2008 congress in Seoul.

During the congress, 37 meeting rooms at BEXCO will host plenary sessions, workshops, technical paper presentations, and exhibitions across nine major topics and 39 technical areas. Five internationally renowned scholars, including Professor Ken Goldberg of the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver keynote speeches, alongside 37 parallel sessions.

A range of technology competitions for students will also be held, including the RoboRacer Grand Prix, a mini-drone competition, and a wearable robotics challenge.

The congress will also offer a variety of programs open to local residents and young people. On August 22, a hands-on AI robotic arm workshop will be held for 30 middle school students. On August 26, around 60 elementary and middle school students will take part in the “IFAC Young Robot Explorers” program, featuring a robotics performance and hands-on robot-building activities.

A special public lecture titled “AI and Robots: Opening the Door to the Future” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on August 24 at the BEXCO Auditorium. Professor Ken Goldberg will speak on “Physical AI: The Future of AI and Robotics.”The lecture will be free and open to the public, with real-time AI-powered Korean subtitles provided. Participants can register in advance by scanning the QR code on the event poster or register on site.

The congress will conclude on August 28 at 4 p.m. with an orchestra performance conducted by Yoonhak Baek, an awards ceremony, and a presentation introducing the Netherlands as the host of the next IFAC World Congress in 2029.
