ABC에서 시작하겠다”면서 Affordability(생활 여력), Broad(확장), Competence(경쟁력) 등 세 가지 목표를 제시했다.
Kim Min-seok Elected as New Democratic Party Leader… Secures 54.08% of Votes via Preferential Voting System
Let’s Us Open a 100-Year Era for the Democratic Party and a Golden Age for the Republic of Korea
I Will Create a Working Democratic Party, a Winning Democratic Party, and a Harmonious Democratic Party
Break News, Political Reporter Kim Choong-lyoul = Candidate Kim Min-seok was elected as the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea at the party's national convention on the 17th. With the full support of President Lee Jae-myung, he has become the leader of the ruling party, which holds 161 seats in the National Assembly and will exercise the right to nominate candidates for the 2028 general election.
Representative Kim was elected with 54.08% of the vote at the national convention held at the Daejeon Convention Center this afternoon. Candidate Jeong Cheong-rae recorded 45.92%.
In the three-way race between Kim Min-seok, Jeong Cheong-rae, and Song Young-gil, securing a majority of votes was the key factor, but Representative Kim failed to reach that majority. Accordingly, under the preferential voting system introduced for the first time by the Democratic Party at this national convention, the second-choice votes from party members who voted first for candidate Song Young-gil (who ranked third) were added to the votes of candidates Kim Min-seok and Jeong Cheong-rae, respectively.
The preferential voting system is a method in which candidates are listed in first to third order based on preference; if no candidate receives a majority of votes, the winner is determined by adding the second-choice votes of voters who voted first for the lowest-scoring candidate.
The ranking for this party leader election was determined by combining 70% of the votes from delegates and party members with 30% from a public opinion poll. Two Pro-Myung and Three Pro-Cheong Members of the Supreme Council... Final Structure Formed as 4 to 3
Candidates Park Seon-won (first-term) and Seo Mi-hwa (first-term) from the pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) faction were elected as Supreme Council members to work alongside newly appointed Democratic Party of Korea Chairman Kim Min-seok. From the pro-Cheong (pro-Jeong Cheong-rae) faction, Choi Min-hee (second-term), Lee Seong-yoon (first-term), and Han Min-soo (first-term) were selected. Candidate Kim Yong from the pro-Myung faction was eliminated. With three members from the pro-Cheong faction and two from the pro-Myung faction, Chairman Kim Min-seok’s nomination of two members has resulted in a 4 to 3 structure.
In his acceptance speech as party chairman on this day, Chairman Kim emphasized a united "one team," stating, "The party will strive for the success of President Lee Jae-myung and the government of people's sovereignty. This is because that success is the success of the people." He further stressed, "Jeong Cheong-rae and Song Young-gil will also run alongside us. I will broadly open the stage and welcome them together." Representative Kim stated, “Forty years after I embarked on the path of a public figure as a 20-year-old Seoul National University student council president demanding a truth investigation into the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, I have become the leader of the Democratic Party, the only historical party in South Korea and the world’s leading party for K-democracy.” He expressed his pride in continuing the path of his lifelong comrade, Lee Jae-myung, while feeling a heavy responsibility due to the mission of ushering in a K-Golden Era.
Representative Kim declared, “I will change the Democratic Party. I will start from ABC,” presenting three goals: Affordability, Broad, and Competence. He emphasized, “From today onwards, every day, the Democratic Party will go beyond being a historical and democratic party to become a responsible party focused on the lives of the people.”
Prior to this, Party Representative Candidate Kim Min-seok appealed for support from party members at the 3rd Regular National Party Convention, urging them to “usher in a golden age for South Korea and a golden age for the Democratic Party.”
Candidate Kim took the stage as the first speaker of the day, emphasizing the Democratic Party's historical legitimacy. He asserted, "The Democratic Party is virtually the only historical party in the Republic of Korea," adding, "History, democracy, peace, security, legitimacy, overcoming civil unrest, and economic growth are all the pride and identity of our Democratic Party."
He stated, "Our dream today is to usher in a golden age for the Republic of Korea for the first time in its 5,000-year history," and asked, "Isn't the K-Golden Age—foretold by India's poet laureate Tagore, predicted by BTS and Kedehan, acknowledged by NVIDIA's Jensen Huang, and dreamed of together by President Lee Jae-myung and myself, Kim Min-seok—the dream of us all?" He continued to receive enthusiastic cheers and applause as he emphasized, “Dangun’s dream of ‘Hongik Ingan’ (benefiting all humanity), Baekbeom’s dream of a cultural nation, the dreams of Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, Moon Jae-in, and Lee Jae-myung, and the dream of all of us here are one; this is an irreplaceable Republic of Korea and the K-Golden Age.” He asserted, “A golden age is opening where everyone is trying to emulate Korea, and the Lee Jae-myung administration is opening the first door to it. If we do well now, we can usher in a golden age for the Republic of Korea and a golden age of democracy for the next 20 to 30 years, spanning the 100th anniversary of liberation and the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Party.” hpf21@naver.com
