안 교수의 사업명은 ‘BEACON(Building EU–Asia Cooperation Outside uNcertainty)’이다.

Professor Ahn Sang-wook of the Department of International and Area Studies at Pukyong National University has been selected as a 2026 Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission.

Professor Ahn, who also serves as president of the Korean Association of European Studies, was selected for the Jean Monnet Chair, a flagship international academic program through which the European Commission supports European Union-related education and research at universities around the world through the Erasmus+ program.

Under the three-year program, Professor Ahn will receive a total of €60,000 to conduct education and research activities as well as academic and public outreach programs related to the European Union.

The project, titled “BEACON (Building EU–Asia Cooperation Outside uNcertainty),” will examine the EU as a rules-based normative actor amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and the restructuring of global supply chains. It will focus in particular on the prospects for cooperation between the EU and East Asia in areas including global supply chain transformation, the energy transition, and multilateral trade.

The research findings will be shared and disseminated through regular courses at Pukyong National University, domestic and international academic conferences, policy dialogues, and public and media outreach activities.

The European Commission highly evaluated BEACON for linking issues such as climate governance, the energy transition, and trade with the EU’s rules-based and regulatory models. It also recognized the project’s potential to expand EU studies and education beyond the Seoul metropolitan area by establishing Busan as a regional hub. In addition, Professor Ahn’s role as president of the Korean Association of European Studies and his access to its nationwide European studies network were cited as key strengths.

Professor Ahn said, “At a time when uncertainty is increasing due to geopolitical conflicts and the restructuring of global supply chains, cooperation between Korea and the EU, which share a commitment to rules and multilateralism, is becoming increasingly important.”

He added, “Through the Jean Monnet Chair, I will strengthen academic and policy networks between Korea and the EU and explore ways for the two sides to jointly respond to growing uncertainty.”

Previous Korean recipients of the Jean Monnet Chair include Professor Moon Woo-sik of Seoul National University in 2007; Professor Lee Jae-deuk of Pusan National University in 2010; Professors Kim Nam-kuk in 2012, Park Sung-hoon in 2013 and 2019, and Lee Jae-seung in 2018 of Korea University; and Professor Kim Si-hong of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 2016.
