=Driver escapes through window after mistaking water for land while parking; Coast Guard assists with vehicle recovery

A car plunged into the sea at a breakwater near Gongsu Port in Haeundae-gu, Busan, on Saturday night after the driver reportedly mistook the area for land while parking. No injuries were reported.

The Busan Coast Guard said a passerby reported at about 8:04 p.m. Aug. 30 that a vehicle had fallen into the water near the breakwater.

The Coast Guard dispatched a patrol team from its Songjeong unit to the scene. Officers arrived at about 8:17 p.m. and found a passenger car partially submerged, with only its bumper visible above the water.

The driver, a woman in her 40s who lives in Haeundae, escaped through a window on her own. She was alone in the vehicle and was taken to a waiting 119 emergency ambulance, where she received assistance and rested. A breathalyzer test found no signs of alcohol impairment.

The Coast Guard’s Central Maritime Special Rescue Team later arrived at the scene. Two divers entered the water and connected the submerged vehicle to a crane positioned on land. The vehicle was successfully recovered and brought ashore at about 10:01 p.m.

According to the Coast Guard, the driver told investigators that she mistook the area near the breakwater for land while parking and accidentally pressed the accelerator while reversing, causing the vehicle to fall into the sea.

A Coast Guard official urged drivers to exercise particular caution when parking near breakwaters at night and to carefully check their surroundings before moving their vehicles.
