[Here is the English version of the article] 31st Busan International Film Festival to Strengthen Global Standing with Expanded Competition and Greater Audience Access
[Here is the English version of the article] The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will take place from October 6 to 15, 2026, presenting a broader lineup, expanded competition programs, and enhanced opportunities for audiences to engage with filmmakers from Korea, Asia, and around the world.
This year’s festival has been officially recognized as an A-list festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), further strengthening its position among the world’s leading film festivals. With 246 officially invited films from 59 countries, expanded screening opportunities, and the participation of internationally acclaimed filmmakers and Asian stars, BIFF will build on its role as a major hub for Asian cinema.
Busan International Film Festival Advances into the World’s Top Six, Expanding Audience Access and Competition At a press conference held Thursday morning at the Medium Theater of the Busan Cinema Center, BIFF Chairman Park Kwang-su said, “We continue to consider how the Busan International Film Festival can move forward as a distinctive and leading film festival in Asia,” adding, “There are still many areas that need improvement and issues that need to be addressed.”
This year, BIFF was included among the 17 international film festivals designated as A-list festivals by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). It was also named one of six international film festivals designated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in connection with eligibility for the International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards.
“European film circles appear to regard Busan as one of the world’s 17 major film festivals, while the U.S. Academy considers it one of six important festivals worldwide,” Park said. “This difference in perspective is also connected to the identity of the Busan International Film Festival.”
Strengthening Global Standing, Expanding Audience Engagement and Highlighting Animation Jung Han-seok, executive director of BIFF, identified six major features of this year’s festival: strengthening its global standing, expanding opportunities for audiences, reinforcing the competition section, the growing prominence of animation, the participation of internationally renowned guests, and tributes to women filmmakers.
A total of 245 films will be screened this year, the largest lineup since 2019 and four more than last year. The opening ceremony will move from Wednesday to Tuesday, extending the festival period for audiences. On Thursday through Sunday, when attendance is typically highest, daily screenings will increase from four to five sessions.
The competition section, launched last year, has also been strengthened with a broader range of high-quality entries. Films from across Asia, including Korea, Japan, China, Uzbekistan, Iran, Indonesia and Taiwan, will compete.
The Vision section, which expanded from a Korea-focused program to one covering Asia as a whole last year, will present 24 films this year, including 12 Korean films and 12 Asian films.
Animation has also emerged as a major trend at this year’s festival. Fourteen of the films in the overall lineup are animated works, while a special program dedicated to the history and major works of Japanese animation will present 13 additional films.
“Keeping pace with changes in contemporary cinema is one of the important responsibilities of a film festival,” Jung said. “As many outstanding animated films have been produced, we wanted to actively reflect this trend in this year’s program.”
Opening Film: The Table: Day and Night The festival will open with Kim Jong-kwan’s The Table: Day and Night. Blending delicate direction, a thoughtful perspective and warm humor, the dialogue-driven drama features an ensemble cast including Kim Min-ha, Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Sun-hwa, Jang Ryul, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Hee-jun, Jeon So-young and Kim Dong-hwi.
The film will be screened at the Busan Cinema Center’s outdoor theater during the opening ceremony, welcoming audiences to the 31st edition of the festival.
Opening Ceremony Award Recipients Michelle Yeoh will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award, presented to an Asian filmmaker or film professional who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of Asian cinema and culture. Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once and received an Honorary Golden Bear at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.
The Korean Cinema Award will go to Kim Dong-ho, the founding executive director and former chairman of BIFF, who played a pivotal role in establishing and developing the festival and promoting Korean and Asian cinema internationally.
The Camellia Award, honoring women in cinema who have challenged conventional norms and advanced the status of women in the film industry, will be presented to Hong Kong master filmmaker Ann Hui. Since her feature debut with The Secret in 1979, Hui has explored history, society and human life through acclaimed works including A Woman Is Forty, Summer Snow, C'est la vie, mon amour and The Golden Era.
A Major Step Forward on the Global Stage BIFF’s designation as an FIAPF A-list festival marks an important milestone in its international development. The winner of the festival’s top competition prize, the Busan Award for Best Film, will also become eligible for submission to the Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category, expanding opportunities for Asian films discovered in Busan to reach global audiences.
BIFF will also participate in the inaugural Lumière Summit in September, jointly led by Korea and France, bringing together international film and audiovisual industry leaders to discuss the future of cinema.
After three decades of discovering Asian filmmakers and connecting them with the world, BIFF aims to move beyond being an internationally recognized festival and become an active platform shaping the future of global cinema.
Expanded Access and Screening Opportunities A total of 246 officially invited films from 59 countries will be presented, including 105 world and international premieres, 95 world premieres and 10 international premieres.
The festival will open on Tuesday, October 6, one day earlier than in previous years, to provide audiences with greater flexibility in planning their festival experience. From Thursday through Sunday, daily screenings will increase from four to five sessions, giving audiences more opportunities to see major films.
The festival will be presented across eight cinemas and venues, including the Busan Cinema Center, CGV Centum City, Lotte Cinema Centum City, the Korean Film Council screening facility, Sohyang Theatre, Busan City Hall’s BCC Hall and other venues. Community BIFF will be held at Megabox Busan Theater and Catholic Center Space 101.1.
Stronger Competition and a Broader Vision The competition section, launched in 2025, enters its second year with 14 films representing the diversity and vitality of contemporary Asian cinema.
The lineup includes works by emerging and established filmmakers from Korea, Japan, China, Iran, Indonesia and other Asian countries, ranging from intimate relationship dramas and family stories to animation and socially engaged cinema.
The Vision section, introduced last year, will also expand its focus on independent cinema from Korea and across Asia. Vision–Korea brings together emerging, mid-career and established directors, while Vision–Asia presents films from Hong Kong, China, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Iran and beyond.
Japanese Animation in Focus BIFF will present a major special program devoted to Japanese animation, featuring 13 feature and short films ranging from rarely screened theatrical works to new films representing the next generation of Japanese animation.
Animation will also feature prominently in the Midnight Passion section, while Forum BIFF will examine the current state and future direction of Asian animation.
Icon: A Record Lineup of World-Class Filmmakers The Icon section, dedicated to new works by internationally acclaimed filmmakers, will expand from 33 films last year to a record 35 this year.
The lineup includes films by major directors such as Andrey Zvyagintsev, Paweł Pawlikowski, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Pedro Almodóvar and James Gray, alongside works by leading Asian auteurs including Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lee Chang-dong, Hong Sang-soo, Tsai Ming-liang and Lav Diaz.
Major international festival winners and highly anticipated Hollywood and European releases will also be presented.
Open Cinema: Films for Both Critical and Popular Audiences Open Cinema at the Busan Cinema Center will screen seven films combining artistic achievement with broad audience appeal.
The program includes Hirokazu Kore-eda’s live-action adaptation of a manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, a film starring Isabelle Huppert, a romantic comedy directed by Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, as well as works from Japan, China, Italy and Thailand.
Kim Sung-yoon’s The Head of the Family, featuring Jung Jae-young, Lee Yi-kyung, Kim Joo-ryoung and Kim Ah-young, will also offer audiences an entertaining family comedy.
Korean Cinema in the Spotlight BIFF will continue to support the vitality of Korean cinema through Korean Cinema Today–Special Premiere and Korean Cinema Today–Panorama.
The lineup includes films spanning family drama, crime thriller, animation and contemporary independent cinema, including Kim Jong-kwan’s opening film The Table: Day and Night, as well as new works featuring Kim Hye-ja, Kim Jae-won and Jo Yi-hyun.

Among the visiting directors are Majid Majidi, Lin Ta-ro, Lav Diaz, Ann Hui, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Tsai Ming-liang and Bertrand Bonello, along with leading Korean directors Lee Chang-dong, Na Hong-jin and Kim Jee-woon.

[ACFM 2026 to Take Place October 10–13, Charting a New Course for Asia’s Content Industry]
The 2026 Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) will take place in Busan from October 10 (Saturday) to 13 (Tuesday). Against a rapidly changing content landscape shaped by economic uncertainty, reduced investment, generative AI and the restructuring of streaming platforms, ACFM 2026 will explore a new direction for Asia’s audiovisual industry through three key priorities: strengthening connections, reinforcing its core programs and expanding into new areas.
Connecting Asia as a Global Content Hub For the first time, ACFM will introduce a Country of Honor program, with Thailand selected as its inaugural partner. With its proactive production incentives and growing global investment, Thailand has emerged as an important production hub in Asia. ACFM will spotlight the country’s film and content ecosystem and create new opportunities for international collaboration.
A dedicated Thailand Pavilion will be established at the Sales Market, providing opportunities for business meetings with local companies and distributors while showcasing Thailand’s production support policies and filming incentives. The Busan Story Market will highlight Thai film IPs with remake potential, while the Producers Hub and Market Conference will explore opportunities for Korea-Thailand co-productions and broader international partnerships.
