[Here is the English version of the article] Busan City Conducts Behind-the-Scenes Efforts for KDB Relocation, Pursuing It Separately from South-Eastern Investment Corporation
The Busan Metropolitan Council has urged the city government to take assertive leadership and deliver tangible results regarding the relocation of the Korea Development Bank (KDB) to Busan. Meanwhile, official statements clarified that recent rumors surrounding the city's financial crisis were unfounded.
Urging Action Amid Political Opposition During the 339th extraordinary session on the 1st, Busan City Council Member Kim Bo-eon (People Power Party, Suyeong-gu 2) pointed out the harsh external environment, noting negative sentiments from the president and ruling party leadership.
Council Member Kim pointed out that the president had previously suggested a South-Eastern Region Investment Corporation as an alternative, while ruling party leaders and local chapter chairs had continuously opposed the move, arguing that the city had yet to demonstrate visible achievements.
Busan City: "Multi-Pronged Behind-the-Scenes Efforts Underway" In response, Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo explained that publicly disclosing details of discussions with the president or party leaders could trigger counterproductive competition from other municipalities. Mayor Jeon assured the council that the city was actively working through both official and unofficial channels to seize key opportunities, asking citizens not to worry.
Two-Track Approach: KDB Relocation and Investment Corporation When Council Member Kim argued that the KDB relocation and the investment corporation served completely different purposes and scales and should thus be pursued independently, Mayor Jeon agreed, confirming that the city would push forward with both initiatives separately. Mayor Jeon added that the city would maintain proactive momentum and seek bipartisan cooperation during upcoming legislative budget meetings in Seoul.
Clarification on Financial Crisis Rumors and Focus on Youth Jobs Addressing recent controversies regarding the city's fiscal health—specifically reports concerning an 8.6 billion KRW net surplus—Mayor Jeon clarified that net surplus represents only a fraction of total fiscal resources and reaffirmed that the city's finances remained sound. Closing his statement, Council Member Kim emphasized that securing KDB alongside secondary public agencies was vital to halting youth outflow and creating high-quality local jobs.
