In the past, the waste landfill in Seokdae-dong, Haeundae-gu, has been transformed into an eco-friendly arboretum.

From the 20th, Busan City will temporarily open the first stage of the completed section of the Haeundae Arboretum.

The total area of the arboretum is 628,275m2 (approximately 190,000 pyeong), which is about 1.4 times that of the Busan Citizen Park (140,000 pyeong), and the total project cost is 84 billion won, which is expected to be completed in 2025.

The space to be opened this time is about 133,000 pyeong, including Healing Forest (414,864㎡) and 655 parking lots (24,556㎡), and 190,000 trees of 634 species including zelkova are planted in the forest.

There is also a small zoo where you can experience feeding donkeys, sheep, and goats, as well as convenient facilities such as toilets, pavilions, and chairs.

The city does not charge entrance fees and parking fees so that citizens can use them without burden due to the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak.

The city plans to first open the section completed before the project is completed in 2025 to create a walking space where citizens can relax.

However, it is pointed out that the opening is limited to group viewing by reservation until September, and it is not available to all citizens who visit this place.

Citizens who want to see a group can make a reservation through the integrated reservation system (https://reserve.busan.go.kr/index), and a forest commentator leads the tour. It is open only on weekdays and not on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The Seokdae Garbage Landfill, where the arboretum was built, was operated for about six years from 1987 to 1993, generating odors, leachate, and harmful gases, making it a representative hate facility in Busan.

In May 2009, the city went through a feasibility review of the arboretum by the Forest Service and established an arboretum creation plan in February 2010, and in May 2017, the construction for the first phase was completed.

From next year, the city plans to start construction in June 2023 by promoting the detailed design of construction projects such as greenhouses, management offices, and exhibition centers, which are the core facilities of the arboretum. In addition, by May 2025, the plan is to complete all processes and completely open the Haeundae Arboretum.

Lee Jun-seung, head of the Busan city's environmental policy office, said, "During this temporary opening, we will identify problems and complementary points through detailed analysis of the usage behavior of visitors and gradually improve them."
