[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산 기장군이 차세대 원전으로 꼽히는 혁신형 소형모듈원전 SMR 유치에 속도를 내고 있다. 관련 유치 동의안이 군의회를 통과하면서 사업 추진이 본격 궤도에 올랐다.

기장군의회는 최근 열린 제294회 임시회에서 ‘SMR 신규원전 건설 후보부지 유치 동의안’을 상정해 심의한 결과, 별다른 이견 없이 만장일치로 가결했다. 공공 갈등이 예상되는 에너지 시설 유치 사안에서 의회가 단일한 입장을 보였다는 점에서 의미가 있다는 평가가 나온다.

군은 이번 의회 승인으로 법적·행정적 절차의 핵심 관문을 넘은 만큼, 유치 경쟁에서 주도권 확보에 나설 방침이다. 이에 따라 이달 말 마감되는 신청 일정에 맞춰 한국수력원자력에 공식 유치 신청서를 제출할 계획이며, 관계 공무원들이 직접 본사를 방문해 사업 의지와 준비 상황을 설명할 예정이다.

앞서 기장군은 공모 참여 의사를 밝힌 이후 지역 내 5개 읍·면을 중심으로 주민 설명회를 이어왔다. 설명회에서는 SMR 기술의 특성과 기존 대형 원전 대비 안전성, 지역경제 파급 효과 등이 중점적으로 다뤄졌으며, 주민 의견을 수렴하는 과정도 병행됐다. 군은 이러한 과정을 통해 초기 단계에서의 정보 격차를 줄이고 정책 수용성을 높이는 데 주력해 왔다.

정종복 군수는 SMR 유치가 단순한 발전시설 확보를 넘어 지역 산업 구조를 다변화할 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 보고 있다. 그는 관련 산업과 연계한 일자리 창출, 인프라 확충 등 장기적 파급 효과를 강조하며, 지역 발전 전략의 핵심 축으로 삼겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.

다만 원전 유치에 따른 안전성 우려와 주민 수용성 확보는 여전히 주요 과제로 남아 있다. 군은 이에 대응해 지원 정책을 구체화하는 한편, 위험성에 대한 불안을 줄이기 위한 정보 공개와 소통을 강화할 계획이다. 특히 5월로 예정된 전화 여론조사를 앞두고 군민 공감대 형성에 행정력을 집중한다는 방침이다.

기장군은 향후 평가 과정에서 주민 지지 수준이 중요한 요소로 작용할 것으로 보고, 정책 홍보와 주민 의견 수렴을 병행하며 유치 경쟁력을 높여 나갈 계획이다.

Gijang Moves Ahead With SMR Bid After Council Approval

BUSAN, Gijang County is accelerating its push to host an innovative small modular reactor SMR facility after securing unanimous approval from the local council, marking a key step in the bid process.

The Gijang County Council passed a motion endorsing the county’s plan to apply as a candidate site for a new nuclear power project during its recent extraordinary session. The decision signals rare consensus on a project that often raises environmental and safety concerns.

With the approval in place, county officials plan to submit a formal application to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power before the end-of-month deadline. A delegation is expected to visit the company’s headquarters to present the proposal and outline the region’s readiness for the project.

Since announcing its intention to participate earlier this year, Gijang has conducted a series of public briefings across its communities to explain SMR technology, its potential economic impact, and differences from conventional large-scale nuclear plants. Officials say the outreach has focused on improving public understanding while gathering local feedback.

County Mayor Jung Jong-bok described the SMR initiative as a cornerstone for future growth, citing its potential to stimulate the local economy and help establish a foundation for next-generation energy industries.

At the same time, the county faces the challenge of securing public trust. Concerns over safety and environmental impact remain, prompting officials to expand proposed resident benefits and increase transparency around the project.

Authorities are now working to build broader public support ahead of a telephone survey scheduled for May, which is expected to play a crucial role in evaluating community acceptance as part of the site selection process.
