[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자]  부산시는 27일 오후 시청 대강당에서 박형준 부산시장과 서해수호 용사 유가족, 군 및 보훈·시민사회단체 관계자 등 700여 명이 참석한 가운데 제2연평해전과 천안함 피격, 연평도 포격전으로 희생된 55용사의 헌신을 기리는 ‘제11회 서해수호의 날 기념식’을 개최했다.

이번 기념식은 ‘우리의 바다 서해, 평화와 번영으로’라는 주제 아래 국민의례, 서해수호 55용사 릴레이 소개(롤콜) 영상 상영, 박 시장의 기념사, 주요 인사들의 추모사, 그리고 순직군경 자녀인 소프라노 권소라 씨의 추모 공연 순으로 엄수됐다.

특히 행사장 입구에서는 부경대와 해양대 ROTC 학군단원들이 55용사의 영정 사진을 들고 도열하는 퍼포먼스를 선보이며 시민들에게 영웅들의 용기와 애국심을 전달했다.

또한 천안함 순국 용사인 고(故) 문영욱 중사의 모교 세연고등학교와 고(故) 김동진 하사의 모교 부산디지털고등학교 재학생 100여 명이 자리를 함께해 서해수호의 역사를 미래세대로 이어가는 뜻깊은 계기를 마련했다.

박형준 부산시장은 기념사를 통해 "오늘 우리가 누리는 일상의 평화는 서해의 거친 물결 속에서도 끝까지 물러서지 않았던 영웅들의 위대한 용기 덕분"이라고 강조했다. 박 시장은 "서해수호 영웅들이 사수한 자유와 평화의 토대 위에 대한민국의 새로운 도약을 이끄는 '글로벌 허브도시 부산'을 완성하는 데 시정의 모든 역량을 쏟겠다"라고 말했다.

이어 북한의 지속적인 핵·미사일 도발을 언급하며 “안보 현실은 냉혹한데 정권의 인식이 느슨해질수록 그 위험은 시민의 삶과 안전으로 직결된다”고 경고했다.

박 시장은 이재명 정부를 겨냥해 “북핵 폐기 요구를 뒤로 미루는 말뿐인 평화와 현실을 외면한 자주는 국민을 지켜주지 못한다”라며 “안보를 가볍게 여기는 정치야말로 가장 위험한 포퓰리즘”이라고 직격했다.

이에 대응해 부산시는 2026년을 ‘부산 보훈의 원년’으로 정하고 구체적인 실행 계획을 밝혔다. 시는 보훈 예산 410억 원을 편성하고 보훈명예수당 지급 대상을 대폭 확대하는 등 호국영웅에 대한 예우를 실질적으로 강화할 방침이다.

박 시장은 “기억과 존중의 정신으로 청년 세대가 안보의 가치를 잊지 않도록 하겠다”며 시민들에게 서해 수호 용사들을 함께 추모해 줄 것을 당부했다.

서해수호의 날 개요

제2연평해전(2002년), 천안함 피격(2010년), 연평도 포격전(2010년) 등 북한의 도발에 맞서 서해 북방한계선(NLL)을 수호하다 희생된 55용사를 추모하고 국민의 안보 의식을 높이기 위해 제정된 법정기념일로, 희생자가 가장 많이 발생한 천안함 피격일을 고려해 매년 3월 넷째 주 금요일에 기념행사를 진행한다.

[English News] Busan Commemorates 11th West Sea Defense Day, Honoring 55 Heroes and Pledging a Future as a Global Hub

The city of Busan held a ceremony for the 11th West Sea Defense Day at the City Hall auditorium on the afternoon of the 27th, bringing together over 700 attendees including Mayor Park Heong-joon, bereaved families of the fallen heroes, and representatives from military and civic organizations.

The event, themed "Our West Sea, Toward Peace and Prosperity," was established to honor the 55 brave sailors who sacrificed their lives during North Korean provocations, including the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong (2002), the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan (2010), and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island (2010). The ceremony proceeded with a national tribute, a relay introduction (roll-call) video of the 55 heroes, a commemorative speech by the Mayor, and various memorial performances.

Notably, the ceremony emphasized passing the legacy of patriotism to the next generation, with 100 students from Seyeon High School and Busan Digital High School—the alma maters of the late Petty Officers Moon Young-wook and Kim Dong-jin—in attendance. Outside the hall, ROTC cadets from Pukyong National University and Korea Maritime & Ocean University held a solemn performance, displaying photographs of the fallen heroes to convey their courage and devotion to the public.

During his commemorative address, Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized, “The peace we enjoy in our daily lives today is thanks to the great courage of the heroes who never backed down amid the rough waves of the West Sea.”  

He went on to say, “Building on the foundation of freedom and peace safeguarded by the heroes of the West Sea, the city government will devote all its efforts to realizing ‘Global Hub City Busan,’ which will lead South Korea’s next leap forward.”  

Referring to North Korea’s continued nuclear and missile provocations, Park warned, “Our security reality is harsh, and the more complacent the government becomes, the greater the threat to our citizens’ safety and daily lives.”  

Aiming his criticism at the Lee Jae-myung administration, Park said, “Empty calls for peace that put off the demand for North Korea’s denuclearization, and self-reliance that turns a blind eye to reality, cannot protect our people. Politics that treat national security lightly is the most dangerous form of populism.”

West Sea Defense Day is a South Korean national commemorative day observed on the fourth Friday of March each year to remember the victims of major North Korean naval provocations and to strengthen national security awareness, specifically marking the date of the ROKS Cheonan sinking as its reference point.
