[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시 수산자원연구소가 겨울철 고소득 어종인 대구 자원 회복을 위해 부산 연안에 어린 대구 100만 마리를 방류했다.

부산시는 수산자원연구소가 3일 사하구 다대항 인근 해역에 이어 4일에는 강서구 동선항 인근 해역에 어린 대구를 풀어놓는다고 3일 밝혔다. 이번에 방류하는 대구는 겨울철을 대표하는 고소득 어종으로, 지역 어업인의 소득 증대와 연안 수산자원 회복을 위한 사업의 하나다.

대구는 머리와 입이 크다고 해서 ‘대구어’, ‘대두어’라고도 불리며, 저열량·고단백 식품으로 담백하고 시원한 맛이 특징이다. 특히 탕 요리로 인기가 높고, 알과 아가미, 창자, 껍질까지 다양한 부위가 음식 재료로 활용돼 고급 어종으로 꼽힌다.

한때 대구는 과도한 어획 등으로 자원량이 크게 줄었지만, 부산시를 비롯한 지방자치단체가 어린 물고기와 인공 수정란을 지속적으로 방류한 결과 최근 자원이 점차 회복되는 추세다. 부산시 수산자원연구소는 2012년부터 매년 대구 자어(어린 물고기)를 방류해 오고 있다.

이번에 방류하는 어린 대구는 수산자원연구소 종자 생산동에서 건강하고 활력이 좋은 어미로부터 확보한 알을 부화시켜 키운 것으로, 크기는 8∼9㎜ 안팎이다. 방류된 어린 대구는 봄이 되면 동해안의 깊은 수심대로 이동해 서식하다가, 겨울에는 냉수층을 따라 남해안 진해만으로 산란을 위해 이동하는 회유 습성을 지닌 것으로 알려져 있다.

김준태 부산시 수산자원연구소장은 “올해 대구 방류를 시작으로 점농어, 넙치, 감성돔, 황복, 동남참게, 톱날꽃게, 보리새우 등 우량 수산종자를 지속적으로 생산해 부산 연안에 방류할 계획”이라며 “앞으로도 어업인의 소득 증대는 물론, 갈수록 고갈되고 있는 연안 수산자원 회복에 적극 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

[Here’s the English version of the article] Busan to release 1 million juvenile cod to boost coastal stocks

The Busan Marine Resources Research Institute will release 1 million juvenile cod into coastal waters off the city to help restore winter high-income cod resources, the city said.  

According to the institute, the fish will be released near Dadae Port in Saha District on the 3rd and near Dongseon Port in Gangseo District on the 4th. The project is part of Busan’s efforts to raise fishers’ income and recover depleted inshore fisheries resources.

Cod, known for its large head and mouth, is a low-calorie, high-protein fish prized for its light, clean flavor. It is especially popular in soup dishes, and its roe, gills, intestines and skin are all used in various recipes, making it a premium species in the Korean seafood market.

Cod stocks once declined sharply due to overfishing, but have been recovering in recent years as Busan and other local governments have continued to release juvenile fish and artificially fertilized eggs. The Busan institute has carried out annual releases of juvenile cod since 2012.

The juveniles released this week were hatched at the institute’s seed production facility from healthy, vigorous broodstock and measure about 8 to 9 millimeters in length. After release, they typically move to deeper waters off the East Sea in spring, then migrate to Jinhae Bay on the south coast in winter along cold-water layers to spawn.

Kim Joon-tae, head of the Busan Marine Resources Research Institute, said the city plans to continue producing and releasing high-quality marine seed, including blackfin sea bass, olive flounder, black porgy, tiger puffer, southern mitten crab, saw-edged flower crab and bay shrimp along the Busan coast, starting with this year’s cod release. He added that the institute will keep working both to increase fishers’ income and to restore coastal fishery resources that are increasingly under pressure.
