[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 2029년 열릴 제13차 세계동위원소대회 개최지로 최종 확정됐다.  

시는 지난 15일(현지시간) 이탈리아 피렌체에서 열린 제12차 대회에서 중국과 스위스를 제치고 부산이 차기 개최지로 선정됐다고 26일 밝혔다.

세계동위원소대회(ICI·International Conference on Isotopes)는 세계동위원소기구(WCI·World Council on Isotopes)가 주관하며, 약 2.5~3년 주기로 대륙별 순회 개최되는 학술 행사다.  

전 세계 50여 개국에서 1,000명 이상 연구자가 참가하는 대규모 국제 학술대회로, 부산은 2008년 서울(제6차)에 이어 두 번째로 국내에서 대회를 유치하게 됐다.  

부산시는 이번 행사를 계기로 방사성동위원소 기술과 인프라를 세계에 알리고, 국내 동위원소 산업 생태계 활성화에 나선다는 계획이다. 또한 단순한 학술 교류를 넘어 국내 방사선 산업계와 해외 전문가를 연결하는 ‘비즈니스 플랫폼’으로 대회를 운영할 방침이다.  

시는 해외 바이어와 국내 기업 간 매칭 프로그램을 강화하고, 2028년 본격 가동될 수출용 신형연구로와 연계한 기술 세션과 산업시찰 프로그램도 마련할 예정이다.  

박형준 부산시장은 “세계동위원소대회 유치는 부산의 방사성동위원소 산업 경쟁력을 한 단계 높이는 전환점이 될 것”이라며 “2029년 대회의 성공적 개최를 통해 신규 산업 수요 창출과 시장 확대의 기반을 마련하겠다”고 말했다.  

[Here’s the English version of the article] Busan Confirmed as Host City for 2029 World Conference on Isotopes

Busan has been selected as the host city for the 13th International Conference on Isotopes (ICI) to be held in 2029, the city government announced Thursday.  

The decision was finalized on Feb. 15 during the 12th ICI held in Florence, Italy, where Busan won the bid over China and Switzerland. Organized by the World Council on Isotopes (WCI), the ICI is the world’s largest academic conference in the isotope field, held every 2.5 to 3 years in rotation across continents.  

The event brings together more than 1,000 researchers from over 50 countries. Busan will be the second South Korean city to host the conference, following Seoul in 2008.  

The city plans to use the 2029 conference to showcase its radioactive isotope technologies and infrastructure to the global community and to strengthen the country’s isotope industry ecosystem, positioning Busan as a global isotope hub.  

Beyond academic exchange, the city aims to turn the event into a business platform connecting domestic radiation-related industries with overseas experts. It also plans to expand business matching programs linking local companies with international buyers and to organize technology sessions and industrial tours connected to the new research reactor scheduled to begin full operation in 2028.  

“Hosting the 13th ICI will mark a turning point in enhancing Busan’s competitiveness in the radioactive isotope industry,” Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said. “We expect the successful organization of the 2029 conference will help create new industrial demand and lay the foundation for market expansion.”
